Carry yourself with purpose, but also as if you've not a care in the world. Shoulders back, chin up, chest out.

Any eye contact should be met with a nod or sign of acknowledgement. Someone with whom your familiar, should be met with speaking their name, and a handshake whole looking them in the eye. Being cordial toward someone of whom you're not particularly fond, is a good way to diffuse any direct displays of aggression.

Never lose your center. Your emotional state belongs to you. Control it - don't let someone do it for you.

Physical attacks (shove, single punch) if successfully performed should be met with a smirk, and "Good one!! Are you done? Feel better? Can we stop acting like children and get back to work/drinking/the game?" Them you blow it off as if you would a mosquito bite.

If you're young and still full of piss and vinegar, you may want to throw hands. You've got to think real clearly about the ramifications.

As someone who's fought A LOT in my 50 years, I can honestly say that you may whip someone's ass, but nobody wins a fight, and worrying about saving face with violence is a futile practice.

Will this guy actually inflict major bodily damage? Can I lose my job over this? Could I go to jail over this? Is this something important enough to actually be fighting over?

Standing up for yourself doesn't mean someone has to back down. People like you confuse being assertive with being aggressive.

Please learn the difference. It's perhaps the single change that can literally turn your life around.

I do. It's not so much about winning or making somebody else submit. It's to show that you have self-respect and that mistreating you comes at a cost.

I only switch to the "pretend it's not happening" tactic if my enemy is seriously dangerous (gang of Hells Angels members or something) or irrelevant (drunk stranger in the street).

Standing up for yourself is just a small element of the "bully-proof" lifestyle. It's also about choosing the right kind of people to be around, having a support network, not provoking anyone on purpose etc.

I think knowing when to pick and choose your battles is paramount. I've had moments in time where a dude will say something that runs me the wrong way. While I'm usually one to call out someone's bullshit, honestly it's just not worth it most of the time.

Also, why allow yourself to feel less than cause of someone else's words? Especially of they're strangers? Fuck those people. The only time I say it's time to throw hands is if the other person is going to attack you no matter how level headed you're being.

This isn't binary and there is missing context / implied context.

If someone else backs off once you stand up for yourself, the other group doesn't necessarily "submit". The context implies one of the two must come out as a victor, as if the game is zero-sum. Most situations in life aren't zero-sum, especially not for modern people.

This is a gross misrepresentation of many leader/follower-type relationships (mentor-mentee, dom-sub, parent-child, captain-first mate), only highlighting an abusive one (bully-victim).

Find people who understand the difference. As for situations with people who don't or actual zero-sum games, you come first.

Do good for yourself and others. Find a way to benefit yourself and others and feel good about doing that. :) For me that's easiest to do at work. But someone could also do it with community service for example.

For everyone here. Just assume someone else has a knife in his pocket. Hint: he can put his hand in the pocket and attack you with a knife without putting his hand out of the pocket.

Based on this knowledge, decide how to behave. I've seen a lot of "surprise" videos when one of the fighters had a knife. And to make it clear - if you both have knives - you are both dead 100% in case of a fight. Adrenaline will allow you to fight for 1-5 minutes, and on average you'll get dozens, if not hundred, of stabs.

Absolutely wrong. You can stand up for yourself and no one needs to "submit". They do need to stop bothering you and infringing on your inherent rights.
