The Monk term always makes me think of a monastery.
Also, you might think that a solid idea would to be to form a 503C for men to live simply in dormitory like conditions with a private bath, shared kitchen and common area, and agreed upon rules for quiet hours, pets, smoking (non), drugs (none), or alcohol, to actually allow secular men to live as non-religious monks. Low rents, enough to pay the mortgage maintain the facilities, and perhaps have weekly activities, and maybe group food, would enable a sense of community and belonging without the need for belonging to a religion, or other group.
It would be free of mandatory prayer or religious obligations, but obviously anything as such would be tolerated to allow for the "Monks" to find meaning and purpose. Most would need to work either on internal industrial projects, or out in the community so to support the "Monastery".
As absurd as it may sound, my time working in corrections and seeing how happy a lot of the men in the jail/prison were, and how poorly a lot of them functioned in the outside world as many humans struggle to deal with a lot of the trapping of modern life, led me to believe that one potential solution to the isolation, loneliness and hopeless that a lot of men feel, as well as a lack of desire to follow a prescribed of way of life that effectively reduces an individual to the role of consumer, might be a more communal way of life.
Yeah, it sounds an awful lot like Project Mayhem, but this wouldn't be a violent organization, and hazing wouldn't be part of it. It would be more about support, finding fulfillment and community building.
