One of the things that bothers me about the abortion debate is the rights and protections given to women vs the rights and protections given to men. According to abortion supports a woman has a right to an abortion through her right to provacy. Every putative father's registry I've seen requires him to give up his privacy so he MIGHT be able to protect his paternal right IN CASE he MAY have fathered a child.

Abortion supporters claim that 15 weeks isn't enough because a woman may not know that she's even pregnant. In Ohio putative fathers have 15 days from the birth of a child to put his information into the registry. I'm pretty sure most states are similar, but shouldn't we have a national standard? Why leave it up to the states to decide how much time is enough. There are some states that even require him to provide pre-natal support to the mom.

Unless he's unfit a father should never lose his rights to his child. He certainly shouldn't lose it to a time constraint of 15 days. It should be affirmative consent. It should not be well he didn't say no. The mother is the person looking for relief. The burden should fall on her. She should inform the court who SHE slept with. SHE should give them all the information she knows on the men. If there are more than one guy, it should be determined by paternity test. If no one is determined to be the father, the adoptive parents should be made aware that the putative father has the right to retain his parenting rights whether that's sole custody, visitation, or co-parenting depending on the circumstances The birth mother would also be sunject to sanctions.
