every few years they make up a new excuse to justify circumcision. remember when it was supposed to prevent epilepsy? how about when it was supposed to prevent down's syndrome? the HIV excuse is no less made up than those two were.

Devils advocate: Correlation does not equal causation. Also its possible that the HIV rates would be even higher in America if mgm wasnt as popular. Unlikely, but possible.

That being said, I believe the Africa studies are "science" akin to measuring skulls to test for IQ. ie, pure garbage. But even if we take the Africa studies at face value, and ignore the massive methodological flaws, their best result was like 1.5% total risk reduction. But they hyped it up by using the relative risk reduction of 50%, from 3% to 1.5%.

While a 1.5% reduction in your chance of contracting HIV would never convince me to choose the procedure for myself, especially considering you can virtually eliminate your risk with lifestyle choices and safe sex practices, it may convince somebody. What is not arguable however, is the "benefit" for infants. Infants are not having sex. There is no HIV prevention benefit for a 1 week old. If i choose to cut myself later to have maybe a 1.5% less chance of getting HIV (spoiler alert, i wouldnt, but i never got to choose) thats my choice, and no one elses.

HIV rates in America are not necessarily related to circumcision status. Dirty needles account for much more of the infections then unprotected sex, so it is not accurate to crossover the data to show circumcision increases HIV just as it is disingenuous to use that data to show Circumcision will decrease HIV.

Also, the HIV propaganda used to promote circumcision is from female to male transmission data. American HIV rates from intercourse have a lot of male to male transmission, which no study that I am aware of has targeted that way of transmission.

Now it is logical that circumcision increases friction, which would increases rates of tearing , which should increase rates of HIV transmission.

Not relevant to most that have the capacity to post comments on reddit because circumcision as an hiv prevention method is a deeply flawed half measure at best.

This is why virtually all claims of benefit are also followed by statement that normal protective measures such as condoms must be used at all times anyway.

Essentially circumcision is only beneficial in preventing HIV if applied to humans that resemble docile cattle.
