I just opened an email invitation from my office admin to join in the celebration my company is holding in honor International Women’s Day in the form of watching TED Talks and participating in general “women are awesome” banter with catered food in the conference room.
I don’t know if I should note that I work in the STEM field, but my particular company is undoubtedly male dominated; many (but not all) of the roles women fill are those in accounting, Human Resources, and front of house.
Anyway, part of this email invitation suggested that it was the women are why we, as a company, are great. Sigh.
While I think it’s a great thing for people to be recognized for their accomplishments and achievements, I feel that International Women’s Day (as it exists) is honestly nothing more than third wave feminism force feeding its agenda down the throats of the masses. It is yet another vector by which the feminist ideology gains momentum and power in society, and it seems like there are so many that are completely ignorant of or indifferent to this. Much of the reason for this Day is based on the accomplishments of women in the very early 1900s; and, as we are all aware, times have changed.
Yes, women have accomplished great things, but so have men. Why not just celebrate the accomplishments of human kind as a whole? The gender connotation is marginalizing and irritating. And, realistically, if it weren’t for the accomplishments of men, modern society as we know it would not exist as it does today, but that’s another topic for another time.
Thinking about this “holiday” as it pertains to my life and what I see from day to day just makes me think of the men in my personal life and career life that deserve to be celebrated; not for what their forefathers did one hundred years ago, but for what they have done - and are still doing - each and every day they live.
I suppose most of what I’m typing here now is based on frustration and irritation at the fact that there are so many men that are not supported or uplifted in a remotely similar fashion to their female counterparts. They are simply expected to fulfill the role society has forced them into, and conform to the rigid structure of society’s standards of what their gender should be. No one bats an eye at what so many of them have accomplished... but the women that accomplish the same exact thing (or less) are overwhelmingly praised and worshiped.
So thank you, men; thank you for all you do. For what it’s worth, you have my support. I know I’m grateful for the man I have in my life, and all he does.
