The other day I was watching movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once". And as a film critique and movie lover it made me think. Dont worry, there are no plot spoilers by saying this, but in deep root of the film there is a confrontation between emphatetic, lovable but clumsy and funny male, and his alpha male counterpart from other universe. This is all Im gonna say.
And it made me think. It is so hard to talk to friends and people you know about male problems. It is silent taboo, where you can be stigmatised. Real, strong men dont talk about their problems, but they are learned to support women and be their rock. Women will choose strong and silent man, who are suppresing emotions and will stuck for them whatever they say. This is perfect men for women.
But I think right there, right here thats a problem. If toxic masculinity exists, it is the expectation women have from men. On one hand they are attracted to strong, silent, stoic, on position of power, and on the other hand when they go out of hand, they become violent, controlling.
In reality there is more violence towards men than towards women. But, feminist will say that is not our problem, that is problem of patriarchy because mostly men attacks men (and in prisons mostly men rape men).
But the bigger picture is this: they dont feel responsible for this. And yet they are subconsciously producing this "toxic masculinity" men. Strong, silent, stoic men who will support womens rights are much more desirable than empathic, optimistic, "trying to solve everything calmly" type of men. They are seen as klutz, nothing masculine about that.
Take the elections for example. There is a research that women are coters for 4% more than men. And yet they choose those over and over men, especially authoritative, controling men.
I believe that toxic masculinity exists. But before blaming us, they should make aware that they are very much responsible for that type of men. And until they dont bring to awareness that revelation, there will be violent men who will act strong around women and make fun men who are talking about their emotions.
Tell me what do you think about my thoughts.
