There's quite a bit of research that suggests a two-parent home (not specifically man-woman, mind you) isn't only better, its imperative for the psychological development of the child.

IMO... Important concepts like empathy are formulated when multiple points of view on issues can be presented. When a child grows up only seeing one parent's POV, they can become EXTREMELY lacking in the empathy department (which is, basically a human being's conscious)

I agree with all of that as a woman but for me it was equally important for me to be able to support myself and my hypothetical family first.

I watched my dad and mom divorce and how much we struggled financially, and I have had friends whose fathers died young. I have also seen couples divorce in their 40s or 50s where the woman was a homemaker with no college or work history. I never ever wanted to end up in a situation where I couldn't support myself well. I want nothing more than marriage and kids (and I am going to be doing both very soon) but I wasn't willing to set myself up to fail either.

I'm a woman, I agree with /u/mthang. For me personally while I want to be a mom and wife at some point I also have other goals. I want to be a teacher and to do so I'm getting my undergrad in history and then a masters in education. I would be doing this so that I could support my family and fulfill an innate goal of mine to have a career. I want to be self sufficient. There are some women who only want to be full time moms, and that's great for them, but it is not my personal goal. And since I've known since a very young age that women could be moms, it's more important in my opinion to have information directed at telling women that they don't have to only be moms. There are other options and if they give a woman fulfillment she should be able to do those things.

I've never experienced any feminist, or even any woman, telling me that I should not want to be a wife or mother and should only want to have a career.

*your question is only about women but my comments about women being able to find fulfillment in whatever they decide to do applies to men as well.

I actually got a lot of shit from other females for only taking Office Administration in post secondary when I could have done "so much more with my life". I knew I wanted to get married and be a stay at home mom, so I did enough school that I could have a good job until I met my husband, and would have something to fall back on if we ever needed to be a two income family. Not enough that I would be paying for 4-12 years of post secondary that I wouldn't be using.

Apparently raising a family is a bullshit goal and a waste of time, although since actually having a kid no one with this sentiment has felt the need to say anything even though they were adamant about it until the minute I was pregnant.

It probably is my limited understanding of the meaning of life, but to me having a family and kids is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, I don't understand how you can discount that
