Sure, the fact that their survey sample (86 male students, really?) is so very small leaves a lot of questions regarding the validity of the findings. They're using the responses of 27 male students to generalize the entire population of over 8 million male college students in the USA. The questions are ludicrous and anyone who's done one intro to research class would take one look at the questions and say they're misleading. ”if nobody would ever know and there wouldn’t be any consequences” - This situation wouldn't ever happen in the real world thus the question and responses are irrelevant and pointless.

It seems as though the researcher had a bias when conducting her research and designed her material to confirm her ideals.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Please note that the "scholarly" journal that the original article was published in is new and is funded by and endorsed by the Avielle Foundation (in memory of girl of Sandy Hook killings). The journal (Violence and Gender) was launched in 2013. Most of the articles in the first four publishings are about violence and males (e.g. ISIS, male mass killers, rapists, etc.). Even though this particular article was published in Dec. 2014, it still cites the 1 in 5 college rape statistic. Furthermore, the study's sample is 86 heterosexually self-identified white men (mean age = 21) at University of North Dakota. The men were given extra credit in a course for participating. The men were evaluated with questionable measurements, such as the "Hostility towards Women" survey that uses biased statements to measure men's hostility towards women (such as "I feel that many women flirt with men just to tease them and hurt them"). In terms of rape, 12% (not 33%) answered they'd use forced sex/rape with their female partner if no consequences existed.

Now what does this all mean? Clearly, anonymity, academic "bribery," and open-ended dark fantasy scenarios play a major part in slanting the 12% of men towards choosing indecent behavior answers. But even then, 88% of males did not choose rape. Moreover, the sample was clearly part of a narrow lens (university students in N. Dakota at one university in one course, all heterosexual whites -- not university students in many different universities in the nation from various sexual orientations and races). It is plain to me that this study is an example similar to the other shoddy attempts at demonizing males specifically at universities and broadly in society. Instead, this study is an example of false pretenses with cruel purposes.
