Criminalisation is the wrong approach because it is simply being used as a punishment: it isn't a deterrent because deterrence requires reason, in the moment, and domestic disputes are primarily emotional in nature and reason takes time to catch up with emotion. It's why someone can pour petrol over their family and set them alight and in the next moment kill themselves from remorse: they aren't being rational, it's all driven by primitive emotion. Criminalisation does not create greater rationality that a potential crime is not worth the punishment and thus the potential perpetrator abandons the response: the subsequent punishment aspect of it doesn't come into it, because the individual isn't operating on reason.

Instead of criminalisation, society needs to be able to step in and separate couples when a problem begins and then give them both counseling and to investigate what is going wrong and how to progress from there, not wait until things get ugly and then try to work out who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. Of course that is much harder than simply arresting the most obvious perpetrator on the flimsiest of evidence and then processing them through the criminal system where it is someone elses problem. Stepping in isn't going to happen, because there aren't enough facilities to house separated couples because there aren't even enough houses for people to live in to begin with.

It's not surprising domestic abuse happens: the population receives no education about relationships, how to spot potential abusive situations and what to do about it before it escalates.

In England, where coercive control has been an offence since 2015, the legislation isn't often used.

I think that demonstrates how useful it has been and Australia should not repeat such a wasteful exercise.

Men are in a difficult situation: the male sex drive is now completely dependent on what women want; if the man doesn't do what she wants, she becomes emotional and deprives him of sex until either he does what she says or she eventually calms down and realises her overreaction. He can't get sex elsewhere else it inflames her emotional situation and escalates the problem. How is that not the beginnings of coercive control?

It's even worse than that in that once a woman gets what she wants, she can threaten to leave with the children, or accuse him of abuse and garnish his resources whilst denying him all beneficial aspects of a relationship, including access to the children and the courts side with her.

How horrible would it to be in a relationship, have the children she wants and then leave to live with another man whilst still leeching off her former partner and depriving him of any ongoing benefit that he contributed to, whilst excusing it as "I didn't love him any more"? If the genders were reversed, there would be outrage and yet this is routinely happening in many locations around the world.

That's not to say coercive control doesn't happen in the reverse sense, but we only get to hear about it when it has gone to extremes and we miss any early contributing factors. Coercive control doesn't just come out of nowhere and yet all we focus on is the end result and the person left holding the bag.

Society has to be smarter and fairer than this.

I know so many men under control of their wives. Lacking in courage and afraid to leave. Working hard to earn money and buy the things she wants. Needing to ask permission every time they to go out.

It means that if you enter a marriage you have to prepare for exiting the marriage as well.

You just have to make sure you make the complaint first to get the victim title.

Most controlling behavior done by women. I think feminists are willing to add this to the law because the cultural system feminists and instilled in the population encourages women to come forward while discouraging men: most awareness raising shows female victims and male perpetrators. This creates the false appearance that it is not 50/50, which it is. Founding is exclusive to female shelters. Gynocentrism. These three things will contribute to most men not coming forward.
