So I knew I would face a few ups and downs in my college life especially considering the curriculum in most colleges. I am taking a family relationships course and it has been the most left leaning and "progressive" class I have had. The book often refers to women being oppressed in modern society and men, obviously the oppressors. It talks about how men have male entitlement, there's even a definition for it, literally "male entitlement: the belief that men have certain inherent rights, roles, and responsibilities that are greater and more valuable than those of women". Oh and by the way, this text book is based on very well researched and supported theories says my professor. Yet, I am seemingly not able to draw the distinction as to what is their theory based on whatever evidence and what they are presenting as set in stone fact. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if there was another definition contrary to the one before, more specifically one about women. There is basically nothing negative written about women, unless they're white because they have "privilege".
Here are another definitions surrounding the topic of stereotypes in gender and roles.
Benevolent sexism: Covert words or behaviors that express a denigration of women and ensure their continued inferiority; may appear kind and positive but they represent a sense that women are helpless or weak
(apparently sexism doesn't happen towards men)
Hostile sexism: Negative gender bias that often involves anger and combativeness directed at women.
There's also a drawing of a professionally dressed women pushing a stroller and running errands while carrying a grown man in a robe on her back who is watching a drawing of a football on a T.V. In the caption it reads, "women today experience a severe case of role strain". It is absolutely hilarious but also aggravating that all I had to do was a simple search from the US Census that showed me in 2015, in households, 69% of men were earning more than their female partner, while 24% of females were earning more than their male partner. But what will a naive and vulnerable college kid do when they see this picture? My guess is not that they would question it and seek more information, but quite the opposite to look at it, accept it, and take it as an important fact to be noted, absolutely ridiculous and disgusting to me.
I am getting so fed up with people telling me I shouldn't be angry or feel uncomfortable that a professor is teaching this, I mean MOST professors in this field and many others teach this rhetoric. Two different things, but I am sure black people were portrayed as bad people and white people as good hard workers back when racism was alive and popularized and so schools took the advantage to propagandize the children. Are we now not being fed certain ideas out of hatred and bias that are portrayed as "education"?I am not being taught that it could be the case but that it is the case. Seriously? I'm the crazy one? I think I am going to ask in a curious manner to my professor, "why isn't there a section on women and feminism and their so called entitlement?" I am not understanding why we are expected to go to college to further our education and expand our minds but then also have to question and research very thoroughly what is being taught to us? Shouldn't our education be truthful and unbiased? Is that not a priority whatsoever or do we really think we're doing the right things by teaching young adults that men are bad and women are good?
