So I’ve been told that to find misogyny and objectification I need only to turn on mainstream radio. So I took the top 10 songs from FoxFM Australia.

Unsurprisingly most were about love and relationships. Six songs were male songs and four were female songs which is surprisingly even. Pitbull was probably the closest to sexism with the line “What better than five beautiful women”. The song is pitiful but that’s another subject.

One pattern I did see emerging was that men often sing about how they want to spend all their money on their girlfriend and would die for the love of a particular women. The women tended to sing more along the theme of “I’m going to kick you to the curb, I don’t need you, I am better than you”.

I kept to the top 10 in order to minimise my bias, but thinking of other songs I’ve heard recently I’m pretty sure this is a theme. Women sing about worthless men and how wonderful they are while men sing about how bad they feel for losing a girl or how deeply in love they are with a girl.
