There are some kinda good points on here, namely being that the body mass index (BMI) isn't at all a good measurement from individual to individual. It only takes into account mass but doesn't differentiate between fat and muscle. I can also say that height and body type throws a big wrench into it because if looked up mine before and I'm 6'5" with a broad chest and shoulders. Theres a difference between saying "theres this one ideal and everyone should strive for it even if physically impossible" and saying that being at an unhealthy weight (say, a weight that puts too much strain on your bones and organs) is bad. People will be unhealthy, but the vast majority of the time they can change it, but we're in a society that doesn't want to accept responsibility for itself.

There is a valid point to complaining about the fashion industry, but the problem is an economical one.

In general, straight cut, tight clothes do not look good on women because they have curves, and those curves mean the fabric falls and pulls differently, causing even people who are even just a little overweight to look like a pressed sausage, which does nothing for anyone's self esteem.

But it's cheaper to produce Mao-suit style garments and the fact that smaller people have slightly different body proportions is also an issue because the number of designs needs to be higher whilst the group of people buying them is smaller. So, making garments that do not have a waist or darts and complex cuts so the garment hangs better makes commercial sense -- and straight cuts designs yield more pieces per meter.

The only practical solution is to learn how to sew and make clothes that actually fit you properly.

Btw, very tall/short/muscular men have exactly the same problem, nothing off the shelf fits properly or looks good on them.
