This organization infuriates me when I think about it. They help school age women learn about tech, try to make them excited about it and teach some coding depending on the age group.
As a parent to a son, I can’t imagine how disappointed he would be to not be included in an organization like this. It would be awesome to get all kids more excited about STEM and technology. Some young boys don’t have any exposure if their dad worked a blue collar job to support them.
And girls who code is trying to solve a problem of women being discriminated against by discriminating against boys. At least an adult is old enough to know life isn’t always fair, children shouldn’t have to be put in that type of situation.
I’ve seen the posts here from young boys who see their school mates go on field trips to learn about cool tech, but they aren’t allowed to go just because of their gender.
I’m not saying all this just to vent, I want to be a part of the solution. I want to start kids who code, or something like it, to give all kids, regardless of gender, exposure to the wonderful world of technology. And I want to urge all the CIO’s and tech leads who do blindly worship and contribute to the girls who code initiative, to contribute to an organization that doesn’t discriminate, and helps all children. I’m a data scientist at a Fortune 500 company. I can help lead and teach, but I need guidance. How can we start something to help displace this sexist organization that cares more about a political agenda than it does the feelings and opportunities of our youth?
