Here's two that come to mind for me:

Independent immersion in play. It's fun to watch my 3 yr. old son build towers and drive trucks around the house, to watch him get down to the level of his duplo figures and inspect everything around him. I could be 2 feet away but I'm dead to him when he's in the zone, and it's pretty cool to see.
Exhibitionism. My son seems very performative and seeks attention by experimenting with some of the more outlandish things he's seen people say and do. It's hillarious, and occasionally annoying; I love him for it.

It's really refreshing to hear someone talk about boys in a positive way. Boys and girls are different, and we really need to celebrate both.

I've personally witnessed multiple occasions where my friend's children or my nephews have intervened to stop bullying and protected a weaker child.

My one nephew was with me when I picked up my cat from the vet, because she'd eaten some carpet fibers (a lot of them). When he saw her reaction to me at the vet, he said, "She really loves you, Uncle Gaki-San!" and I told him I loved her back, and that we'd gone through a lot of tough times together, and were a total team. I told him once we got back to my place, I was going to properly introduce him to her, because she's a pretty special cat and he's a pretty special kid, both of whom deserved to know each other, and he just beamed. How can you not love a boy like that?

My son stood up for an autistic boy in his class and befriended him, then wrote an essay for school about how important friendship was to children with disabilities. My son's REALLY fucked up, and it's events like that that give me hope there's a functional human in there, somewhere.

My other nephew decided he liked musical theater and was a bit embarrassed when his Mom asked him to sing a song from Phantom at a family gathering, so I got up and sang it with him to get him started. Afterward, he said that he had no clue I liked musical theater, and then surmised ... I guess we like what we like, huh? Yep, kiddo, we sure do.

My nephews in my brother's family are very rough and tumble sports kids, and I made a show of 'reading them a story', but I did the entire story in the voice of a chicken and had them howling by the end. They both cuddled up on me and asked me to do it again.

My brother's oldest boy admitted to me in secret that he'd stolen some chocolate bars or granola bars from other kid's desks and was ashamed, but couldn't tell his Dad or Mom. I told him that people who make the mistake should fix the mistake, and the best way was to turn a negative into a positive. So, he bought everyone at school granola bars with his savings and then apologized to them. There's NO WAY I had the courage to do that at 10.

When my son was younger, around 7, and not quite so damaged from his mentally ill, feminist mother, we used to walk together in the wooded area behind his house. He wasn't allowed the same toys other kids had, and certainly not any video games or popular toys, so I told him to make up his own games in his head. I used to wander around with him riffing off each other's leads and turning them into little stories. It was so fun!

My son can also sing, really, really well. His choir came to my city on an organized trip, and my mother in law went behind her daughter's back to inform me. We had joint, but she ignored that altogether, so it was always a nightmare, and she wanted to save me some grief. The choir director let me slip in at the back to listen, as long as I didn't contact him. It was glorious. WAY better than I had been expecting, enough that I ended up bawling. The director saw it and gave my arm a squeeze, so I arranged for that very gay choir director to get a bunch of flowers when he got back to his office in Ontario.

Humor.

The ability to keep things light even when they are not. That skill is the antidote to over emotional defeatism, to going extreme and taking everything personal requiring a sprint to a safe place. I can remember being in some of the worst places know to man, under the worst situations when in the service...and it was humor, the stupid quip that came out of nowhere, that often got us through.
