I don't like to bring up this community, but check out the MensLib mental health check-in posts' comment section some time. It's full of men who have been backed into a corner, spat on repeatedly, and now believe that trembling there begging for forgiveness will placate their bullies.

This is what the hypothesis of toxic masculinity is designed to achieve.

“Toxic masculinity is toxic terminology” Barry told PsyPost. “We all need to stop using toxic terminology...".

I pointed this out. So many people snarkly responded: "you don't understand what it means". Maybe we're all stupid and we don't. Maybe the psychologists who refuse to use this term are stupid too. But as a term it's clearly having such a toxic effect on the discussion and on the self-perception of many good people, that maybe it's worth considering that there's something wrong with it.

Proof of that is that we wouldn't dare to talk about toxic femininity. Because even if "it doesn't mean all femininity is toxic", it would still imply something wrong is connected with the feminine gender (otherwise why not simply call it "toxicity").

And the bottom line is just that: I don't want to ever think about my sex, neither its "good" or its "bad" parts. I just want to live my life, do what I like, love and be loved, without ever thinking:"is this what a Good masculine male would do?".

[Healthy] masculinity isn't recommended for survival.

It's required.
