They are probably lying to you. Those figures compare eg a male surgeon working 80 hours a week with a female secretary working 35 hours a week. But they probably suggested the figures were comparing like with like ("equal pay for equal work"). Even when they break down by broad profession they don't compare like with like. Men working longer hours are still directly compared with women. Men earn more because they work harder than women do.

It's not comparing "equal work" and chances are they knew they were lying to you.

Same thing refuted repeatedly it is a median comparison.

Percentage of workforce that is male: 55.62333352515778%

Percentage of workforce that is female: 44.37666647484222%

Median Weekly Earnings.........

Men: $860
Women: $706
Total Median Earnings: $1,566.
Percentage of median earned by men: 54.91698595146871%
Percentage of median earned by women: 45.08301404853129%

Women make ~44.38% of the workforce and earn ~45.08% of total wages (on average).

Men make ~55.62 of the workforce and earn ~54.92% of total wages (on average).

So in essence more men are working but are comparatively being paid less (on average).

Furthermore, you need to assert that:

1) Men occupy a higher percentage of jobs that pay well.

2) Women and men make different choices when choosing careers (reference: http://theop.princeton.edu/reports/forthcoming/ANNALS_07_Dickson_Manuscript_June2009.pdf) and this is entirely up the women. Men cannot be held responsible for a woman's choice in lifestyles.

3) Women tend to take time off work to raise children, this removes them from the job market allowing men to gain a lead in current experience in their absence.

If men and women are different and have different priorities in life, you would naturally expect to see a difference in the median incomes of men and women. If men are more focused on a successful career, and women more focused on balancing a career and a family, then you's expect men's median income to be higher than women's.

So there is a median wage gap, but mostly it is not caused by discrimination. In the chart you linked to there is no controlling for hours worked, or length of time in the job (or a whole bunch of other things). Men on average work more hours than women, so you'd expect men's median income to be more. Women often interrupt careers to become mothers, so they will spend less time in a particular job.

If you control for all the variables, eg you have a childless unmarried man who works 40 hours per week at a specific job, and a childless unmarried woman who works 40 hours per week at the same job, they will be paid the same. The problem is there are more than 20 variables to take into account.

I once worked in an office where two women and two men did the same work. There was a rule against discussing how much we were paid; doing so was an offense for which one could be fired. THAT is a pretty clear sign of inequality.
