I was talking to someone last night about the uselessness of marriage and how I'm planning to avoid getting "legally" married until they change some of the laws involved. I figured a "religious" marriage would be fine as a symbolic event, without the government overseers. But then I heard about this.

I had heard of common law arrangements before, but I always figured they were opt-in for marriage "benefits". Apparently not so. I don't know how difficult it is to opt out of this practice, but I find it ridiculous that the government can give you all the obligations of marriage just for living with someone for two years.

Thoughts?
