I prefer the Canadian Paediatric Society’s position paper which has an the NNTs listed on table 1. (NNT is the Number Needed to Treat, the number of circumcisions necessary to prevent a single occurrence of the issue) http://www.cps.ca/documents/position/circumcision.

Here's the start of the table. To ensure we're reading this the same way, "It has been estimated that 111 to 125 normal infant boys ... would need to be circumcised at birth to prevent one [urinary tract infection]."

Prevention of phimosis: NNT = 67

Decrease in early UTI: NNT = 111 – 125

Decreased acquisition of HIV: NNT = 298 (65 – 1231 depending on population)

I highly recommend anyone interested in the subject to read the whole paper. Excellent information and concise.

The stats imo are very far from medically justifying the procedure.

All of Chinese, Japanese, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, most of Europe, Canada, USA, American continent are uncircumcised. Comparitvely there is no explosion of HIV or any STD's in those societies. Why this atrocity on perpetrated minor male under the guise of medical reasons.

If an adult male chose to circumcise for any reason sure go ahead

circumcision does reduce risk of hiv/aid, why does the article lie about it?
