So I was scrolling on TikTok and came across a video where some woman goes “What a pussy. I thought I’d found a real man” and at first I almost just kept scrolling because, if you’ve been on the app long enough, you’ve heard countless misandrist sounds go VIRAL to the point where it doesn’t even phase you. But for some reason this sound in particular piqued my curiosity because in the background you could hear some man screaming and crying. It gave me that bad feeling, like I was about to come across yet ANOTHER piece of media glamorizing the mistreatment of men. Sure enough, I was right.
The post that made that sound go viral was of a clip from the movie “The Love Witch”. This clip was from the part of the film where the main character, a woman named Elaine, drugs, rapes, and murders a man. That clip of her shaming him while he cries and screams in the other room is right after she just got done doing what she did to him, right before she went on to kill him the next day.
I physically couldn’t continue watching the film beyond that point so I don’t know how the rest of the movie plays out, but those scenes didn’t portray what she did as wrong or evil. In fact, it seemed to glamorize it and put the character of Elaine up on a pedestal. If anything, it’s the men that they portray as the bad ones. Just unintelligent, selfish morons that only care about sex and don’t care about women or love or being loved. It’s like the movie’s trying to justify what she does to them because they didn’t want to marry her right out of the gate. And under that post, all the women commenting were obviously praising it, saying how much they love the movie, how much they love Elaine, etc etc etc all the typical casual misandry.
Imagine if a movie like this with a male protagonist was made and wasn’t portrayed as evil. Imagine a movie where a man goes around drugging, raping and murdering women for 2 hours because they don’t agree to have his children on the first date, and then make it out to be the woman’s fault. Like she wasn’t a “real woman”. Imagine the articles, imagine the rage. I can see the headlines now. “[Insert Movie Title] is A Pathetic Incel’s Wet Dream And An Embarrassment To Humanity”. People would be calling to have the director publicly hung. But this? Nope. It’s fine, they’re men, they deserve it!
Things like this and the way they’re received when men are the victims makes it incredibly difficult to care about women’s issues. Like, I turned that movie off and immediately thought about how little I care what happens to any woman in an alleyway if they can sit there and enjoy stuff like this. You don’t care about me so much that you can make entire movies about it, then why should I ever care about you?
