I get what you are saying, and you are being down voted because her particular situation is not an impossible one as she makes it out to be. The only reason she has put herself in that position is she wants to stay in Sydney and keep up appearances. If she can let go of that, she can persue all her other dreams. Get the job she really wants, and probably get paid for it really well if she moves to regional Australia for the type of jobs she's wants to do. And I wouldn't be surprised that just the down payment for their Sydney home alone would likely cover the cost of their new house in the country. Everything else they've paid into their home just brings them a step closer to retirement.

Having said that, you are right that many men find themselves in a similar position, but most don't earn as much as she does and don't have the same options available to her. They truly are trapped.
