Don't know. That lack of passion towards making your company more successful may be the totally rational reaction to the stagnating wages of the last decades. If they don't care about you, you certainly won't care about them.

The young people of today grew up in that climate. They know it doesn't really matter how much harder they work, the wealth they create won't be shared with them, neither by wages, nor by taxes into society as a whole. It just will become then nth house or car or yacht or wife or mistress of the owners.

They also know, no matter how much of their time an effort and health they sacrifice for the company, they are out the door, the moment they are not needed anymore.

And they know all this by first hand experience. They know no other reality.

There are some real baby boomers that are stupid as shit. They completely fail to grasp that it isn't 1950 anymore. They're utterly oblivious, living in their own world of denial. Their children are retarded, too.

This post is a generalization that doesn't take into account the reality of modern work, and how it has changed over the decades. Ambitious young people rarely seek to follow the exact same path their parents did.

There have always been talentless, unambitious people. The change is mostly about where they are distributed. Many sales jobs have had the money squeezed out of them by the power of the internet. People are much more likely to already know what they want, and what it costs. The sales process is merely to kick the tires in person. Now you can have a low-skilled low-paid attendant handle test drives, with the 'manager' that you speak to at closing is the real sales person.

I bet the people setting up the internet sales channel are talented/ambitious. They saw the changes coming, and figured out means of making money on the back end with financing, and all the post sales add-ons.

I am not old, 32, and can say that this is rampant many places I have worked. Many companies hire for "culture" not for expertise or knowledge. Culture meaning politeness, etc.

In my time, young guys — I can speak with greater knowledge about men —

Too progressive to make a gay joke, instead I accuse him of only ever having a single orgasm per opportunity.

had hobbies/passions.

And paychecks!

If I were 25 years old and had a job selling cars, even if I had other aspirations for my life, [READ: EVERYONE NOT ENGINEERING A BRIDGE OR BLOWING UP ISIS IS TRASH] I would still aim to be the best car salesman in America. That's what we refer to as ambition.

I would learn everything I could about the cars I sold. I would learn how to advocate for the cars without being pushy. During the test drives, I would say a lot more than where the customer should next turn. In addition to talking about the car, I would ask customers about themselves.

He'd get fired in a month and end up on a list.

Many young men have been coddled by parents and by society. If you receive a trophy just for playing, why try to win?

Oh yeah the official loser trophies, those are awesome. I keep mine in a cabinet.

the government will take care of you

Holy shit what a relief, what have I been so worried about?

young men have been given the message that women have no need for the support of a man.

Millions of dollars and decades of research revealed people with vaginas are, in fact, also people. An equally expensive government research program discovered there's no shortage of people, and so the application of vagina-havers for purposes other than being dedicated baby factories was approved in 2014.

Also,

yes officer these men right here all of them

"I detected little ambition in the sex previously known for professional ambition — men. But no one should be surprised. Many young men have been coddled by parents and by society. If you receive a trophy just for playing, why try to win? If self-esteem is given to you without having to earn it, why try to earn it? If the government will take care of you, why work hard? Anyway, ambition in men is probably now considered a form of "toxic masculinity".

Perhaps most importantly, young men have been given the message that women have no need for the support of a man. Women, they have been told all their lives, are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves and any children they might have.

So, then, if the government will take care of you and your income is not necessary to support a family, why be ambitious? Why push yourself to succeed?

Talk to the young men in your life and ask them if they are ambitious. Don't be surprised if they answer "I'll look it up."
