Private vs Public Schools?

I can't speak about ALL private or public schools- I can however, share with you my personal experience. I was brought up in the public school system, and at age 14, my parents took jobs teaching at a private school. As part of their negotiations, I was allowed to attend an otherwise un-affordable school. I outline my experience against my friends who continued on through public school.

I transferred in time for 8th grade, when I had to play a lot of catch up. My classmates had already completed 2 years of foreign language and were far ahead in mathematics. I was able to get tons of extra help though due to extensive after hours tutoring with the teachers (this would not be an opportunity in public school). By 9th grade I was in biology and algebra. By 10th grade chemistry, physics, and trig. By 11th grade, Calculus and AP Chemistry. By 12th grade, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Stat, AP Biology, etc.

Due to my AP schedule, I skipped the first year of college, saved thousands, and still had a stronger foundation than some of my sophomore college peers.

I don't think that the school offered something that public school couldn't, but the environment is much more conducive. Teachers in private school work for a business- they pay better, get better teachers,who have motivation to perform because their jobs are not protected. Furthermore, the parents are similar- they all want to see their kids attend a good college. 100% of our graduating class (50) went on to college and the majority considered state schools their "safety net". This was not even close to the same at my friends public school (500/grade). The mentality is not nearly the same in a public school setting.

The problem, however, with a private school such as the one I attended is, ironically, the parents. While I was there for free, grateful for the opportunity, and being raised to work hard to break the cycle in my family- many of these wealthy students were being raised to just go to a good school for status, so they could eventually work for their family or a friends family. They stayed in small circles making them extremely sheltered, never had to work, making them ungrateful, and ultimately my private school peers were the epitome of the increasing sense entitlement and weakness that I think our youth exhibits. My public school peers didn't reach the same level of opportunity but understood hard work.

TL;DR: Either way you should be involved. Public: Keep them focused on academics, Private: Keep them grounded in the real world.

Try finding a boys only school if possible, or inquiring as to whether or not they separate gender in classes.

Also, religious schools aren't as bad as you would think.

Well, you'd have to look into this particular school yourself, but yes, private schools are better, almost by definition. Of course, private schools that exist for specific reasons like religions aren't by default better, but a normal school is. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be successful.

Though, in relation to gender specific issues I have no idea. I would suggest you look into something like a Montessori school also. The current and common teaching methods aren't much more than making kids shut up and sit still while they're ingesting mostly useless information.

So, to answer your question, no. Neither is good and schooling will probably do him more harm than good. Unless you can educate him completely outside the school system, you'll be compromising on what's best for ~~your son~~ the government's property.

Thanks for all the responses. A lot to think about here. Anyone know the best way to research a school? I can get really generic ratings on websites for public schools, but private school information is relatively hard to come by.

If you can afford private school I honestly can't think of a reason not to go that route.

I honestly don't think the gender is what matters. What matters is the style of teaching. Some styles are better for boys and others for girls.

Sometimes paying for quality is worth it. Check out the school in person.

We only have a single non-religious private school

Do the religious schools force a religion on their students? It might be worth looking into these schools to see what their policies are for students that may have different beliefs. I wouldn't write them off just because they're affiliated with a religion.

I currently go to private school in my sophomore year they teach you to obey not to learn. Everyone im around memorizes they dont learn and its bible stuff too. Dont force your kid to go to a catholic school all you are paying for is prayer and mass in school and its bs too. If your kid wants to oush himself he can do just as good in either case. I hate private school I dont have as many friends I dont fit in as I am an atheist and such and in general its just bullshit haveing to out up with the morons

Do you foresee your son playing sports? Are you the type(like me) that considers yourself athletic and if you were given the opportunity you could have made more out of it? Even if being a college athlete is the end of the road? If so, get him in the private route. There are opportunities available that aren't for public students. From an education standpoint, I would suggest public. Yes, the academic is worse but the social education is much greater. Honestly, people need to learn how to interact with those less fortunate instead of alienating themselves. The fact that you care means to me that he will get a good education regardless because it is starting from home.
