Question about the wage gap myth

A woman told me that the fields females pick to work in are paid less BECAUSE women dominate those fields.

I'd love to see her proof for this claim, because there is plenty to the contrary. I'll share with you the same sources I post when I see topics regarding the wage gap:

It's funny because when they use that argument they usually cite as examples things like business and engineering for "male" careers and nursing and social work as "female" careers.

Surely patriarchy is the reason why business and engineering are financially valuable occupations, right?

No, just like there arent any that do, I guess what you really need to check out the different fields women and men are more interested in, and see which ones of those fields are more likely to have a bigger stake in the general economy, how much more does the general population depend on them,the lenght of time it takes to graduate from those careers, the amount of people studying for those careers, which careers require more specialized talents, which traits are more in demand, etc.

Actually that's only about 1/4 of the story. That statement poses the question, So why don't men also often choose fields that pay less? Studies show that men also want to work less, and that it is men, not women, who have the least flexible and most imbalance between work and time at home and men have less fulfilling jobs.

What you are missing is that this whole phenomenon is caused by discrimination against men. Men would like to work less too. Men would like to have more fulfilling jobs too. Men would like more time with their family too. But men do not have the choice.

Men are far more pressurized to work harder at nastier jobs they hate but which pay more. That is discrimination against men.

Did you know that (if you equate for education levels) black women earn more than white women? Ask your friend if that's because of all the racism against whites. Or maybe it is because on average black women don't have the same ability to choose fulfilling nice safe low paying jobs that white women have.
