I had a blood test today as I have a thyroid issue, I was talking to the nurse about thyroid problems in general and I said ‘I’m lucky, my dose is steady and I generally feel ok, I just have been feeling shitty for a few weeks now so I thought I’d come get it checked’ her response annoyed me.

‘Yeah, men are so lucky, my friend has hypothyroidism and her dose is all over the place all the time’

I said that it’s not really an issue of any particular sex being ‘lucky’ as men are 3 times as likely to die at work and 4 times as likely to commit suicide, it’s attitudes like that from healthcare professionals that really don’t help.

It made the rest of the appointment awkward but I feel like these attitudes need to be confronted for the sake of her future male patients.

Would you guys or girls have done anything differently?
