Every word, an understatement. Very glad people are starting to notice though. This article should be required reading at all levels.

I needed to read this thank you ! I always talk about what I call "feminist propaganda" to my friends. I live in France and am in bachelor year. I' English class, the subjects are horrible according to me : we study texts from women who claim how hard it is to be a woman nowadays ... like ... OH YES IT'S SO EASY FOR A GUY TO BE CONSIDERED AS A MONSTER EVERYWHERE !! everyone should read this article because society is absolutely not patriarchical. It's getting MATRIARCICAL AND THAT'S ALL WHAT WOMEN WANT !! Share this article to as many people as you can !

Edit : oh and the article claims it's in "21st century America" but THIS IS WORLDWIDE !!

I opened the article, audibly laughed and closed it again, I might read it later if I want to see some guy crying about how unfair life is for him because he's a guy.

Life isn't fair for either of us. We need to stop making it us vs them and try to work together for 5 minutes on a coherent solution.

Just read the article. Keep an open mind.

Yeah I've read some of it and it's already the dumbest fucking thing I've ever read.

[–]mcc9999[S] 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well asking you to read it w/ an open mind is all I can do. Whether or not you do that is another thing.

Look at their post history, they’re a teenager. Explains it.

This article conveniently doesn’t address medical discrimination, obstetric violence, and the fact that a great deal of female oppression results solely from being female. From the fact that we bear the children.

Medical studies and clinical trials did not include women and girls, and they didn’t have to, until 1993. Because of this, women’s health issues are often dismissed, overlooked, misunderstood, misdiagnosed, not diagnosed at all, or we are flat out told that we are being dramatic, making it up, it’s all in our heads, or we are seeking attention. This all goes on to this very day, even 30 years after women became included in medical and clinical research. Our bodies and the conditions that affect us are still not well understood. Autoimmune condition, which affect women far more than men, are a good example of this.

The pay gap is real, and while I do believe that it is in part because of differences in career choices and interests, another factor is the effects of pregnancy and maternity leave on a woman’s career and salary. In the best case scenario, it takes years for women to bounce back from the loss in earning potential that one pregnancy causes. If she has her children back to back, that loss will likely never recover. Also consider the fact that women’s fertility window is so small compared to men, who can theoretically reproduce forever. There’s no rush for men they can focus on their career first, become successful, then marry a 25 year old and start a family when they’re 50, and no one would even criticize him for it. For women, if we don’t have it all figured out by 35-40, there’s basically no chance for us. This fact leaves some women unable to achieve their career potential, or financially dependent on their husbands because they are working for free for their family instead (being a stay at home mom doesn’t mean you don’t work, it just means you don’t get paid for your work).

This also didn’t say anything about men’s perceptions about women when it comes to sex. That’s an area where women are still not granted the same agency and freedom as men. We are still sexually harassed and assaulted in the workplace, in school, at home, at church, and this happens in alarming numbers. So does femicide. Three American women are murdered every day, and the perpetrator is almost always a man. In the UK, it’s one women every three days. Murder is the #1 cause of death of pregnant women. The perpetrator is almost always the child’s father.

Women are discriminated against to varying degrees in different religions and religious denominations. Many Muslim American girls are victims of FGM to this very day, and not just recent immigrants either. This is happening to girls who are 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Americans. If you’re not intimately familiar with the 4 types of FGM, look into it. If it doesn’t horrify you, nothing will. All of this is done on the behalf of men. They believe that destroying a woman’s capacity for pleasure protects the interests of her husband, future husband or father.

These are just factors that affect western women. The situation is much more dire in other parts of the world. I’m sure there’s more that I’m forgetting. I appreciate that you acknowledge that things were worse for women 40 years ago, but you say that as if 40 years ago was a long time. That was 1983. That’s within an older millennial’s lifetime.
