When people post articles about false accusations, a giant part of me is grateful that light is being shed on how horrific the consequences of having a man being falsely accused are. Even if he isn't charged and sent to prison, the accusations themselves are very much enough for the "rapist" or "abuser" term to stick. I'm sure most, if not all of us know that.

But another part of me is cynical towards articles that don't go into depth on how the trial went and why the accused men are said to be not guilty. The way sexual assault is defined in the USA varies by state. For example, the Texas Penal Code states that " a sexual assault is the penetration of another person’s sex organ, anus or mouth without their consent." This is not an accurate definition of sexual assault, at least in my opinion. Sexual assault is not just about penetration, but unwanted fondling, touching, etc. Not to mention online sexual abuse, which usually isn't taken as seriously. Furthermore, there is little consensus about the definition of consent when it comes to legality. Again, using the example of Texas, "the emphasis is still put on the use of physical force, violence or coercion." However, even definitions of coercion aren't agreed upon, and many sexual assault victims/survivors don't have physical injuries to prove physical force and/or violence. This leads many real victims/survivors to be left at a dead end, a state of limbo where we still aren't sure what the real story is. This affects both truthful and false allegations.

All in all, forms of sexual assault, even rape, are extremely hard to prove. If the articles posted on this subreddit would go into detail about the trials (as much detail as they can provide), that would help me feel less cynical. On the other hand, do I doubt that false accusations are made towards innocent men? Not at all. Do I doubt the awful, traumatic consequences of these false accusations? Nope! False accusations hurt everyone: the accused, men in general, and victims/survivors of actual sexual assault, coercion, harassment, etc.
