I'm sure most people will remember a while ago the elevator incident with Richard Dawkins and all that. When it happened I didn't really pay much attention to it I have to admit but I was thinking about it today because someone linked somewhere or whatever, somehow it came up. And I thought ok, here's what actually happened:

  • a man and a woman share an elevator at night / before dawn (whatever it was, it was dark)
  • man tries to hook up with woman
  • woman declines
  • woman freaks out on the web 'cause it was so damn creepy

So I'm thinking, ok I understand it's "creepy" for a man to do something like that... but isn't that actually more or less the problem? That perception I mean. Suppose it was 2 women in the elevator, one of them's a lesbian and asks the other woman to hook up. Would the other woman have freaked out just as much as in this case?

I doubt it... so isn't that "fear of men" actually sexist? If there was any real problem during with the elevator incident, isn't that it?
