Violent crime of all sorts has fallen all over the developed world during this period, seemingly independent of political ideology or public policy. There are a lot of theories but no one really knows why. The decline in DV is just one piece of that much larger trend.

While a 50% decline is staggering, politifact is pretty good about getting their numbers right.

The fact that they provided citations from very reputable sources (Bureau of Justice Statistics and the American Bar Association) leads me to believe this number is correct.

Other comments here have already pointed out the two most important caveats to this number, however. (1) All violence and crime has been on a steady decline over the past 30 years, and (2) correlation doesn't mean causation.

whether it's true or not, the name still needs to change to something other than "Violence Against WOMEN Act"
