So my question stands, what exactly happened to feminism?

This is from the Declaration of Sentiments at Senecca Falls.The very first "feminist" get together, circa 1848.

The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpation on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world.

Nothing happened to feminism.They were always like this.It's why they have always been a minority group among women.Despite their pretense to the opposite.

The feminist movement WAS always like this. It wanted men's rights without men's responsibilities. It was always a female supremacy movement.

It's just that after women got men's rights, it became harder to hide it's true nature.

Feminist movement was always like that, as pointed out by /u/Demonspawn.

1) Rights to vote: you can't say that without feminism women would not be able to vote. It's false dichotomy: either feminism, or not voting, and it's wrong. Why? Because most men could never vote either. Now all men can. Without any feminism. Also in most countries (probably all countries if you exclude Arab countries) all women can vote, but not all countries had strong feminism movement.

2) Suffragettes in the US were typically white supremacists and were very actively against letting immigrants (men or women) to have a right to vote. They were only concerned about upper class white women. Remember that after (or during, I forgot) the Civil War black men got conscripted and, therefore, got a right to vote. Suffragettes (Rebecca Felton - first woman in US senate, for example) were worried that if black men can vote they will start raping white women. Or take Anna Howard Shaw or Susan Anthony:

Anna, like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, increasingly argued that White women were more qualified to vote than Black and immigrant working-class men and women.

2) Second wave brought us: SCUM manifesto, reducing male population to 10%, fish/bicycle, men-hate is an honorable activity, every sex is rape and so on.

TL DR: feminism was always like that.

It was always a lot like this. There were always elements of it. For example it was immidiately anti-male from the word go. It was just easier to campaign that way because society was so anti-male / pro-female already. Hence the saying that feminism is just the other side of the coin from traditional conservatism.

For example feminists went on and on about drunk husbands beating their poor wives the way they go on about rape today. A good false accusation makes for fine propaganda and feeds into what everyone likes to think about men anyway.

Feminists could have taken the high road. They didn't. They took the easy screw men over, sex war men and women are enemies and men are all evil road.

So the rot was there from the beginning. So was the narcissism. The victimry. The "we rich white women are worse off than black slaves" crap. Reality was they were treated better than anyone else. but that doesn't sell well. Victimry does (for women). They shamelessly used their power to get more.

Sure some wanted equal responsibilities and duties too at first but those voices, never a majority, got fewer and fewer. Getting more privileges was just the easy path.

So yes to the vote, but no to conscription that went with it.

And you can see how close to a hate movement all that already was even back in the day when they had some issues that were actually worth fixing (even if they were not a matter of equality because men's issues were not being addressed too).

But since they got all their issues dealt with by around 1890 (except the vote because most women still opposed the vote for women until the 1910s) they became a movement without a cause and just wnet off the deep end of anti-male hate.

Social media, mainly used by women, gives an easy platform to collectively team up on people, organizations, and ideas. Becomes very easy to "retweet" without having to think. News outlets cover what happens on social media.

Second, I'd argue men are way more spineless today and don't know how to tell women to shut up.

The changes are not ideological but social. It's the world around gender Feminisms that has shifted radically, rather than changes to those Feminisms as such.

For me, I would distinguish between Feminism on the one hand and Women's Rights on the other. Like others in the thread, I don't actually think that (gender) Feminism has changed very much at all over the sat 40+ years and that many of its core ideas and values have remained really quite consistent.

I could be wrong, but my impression is that Feminism rose up on a tide of popular support for equal rights - equal pay, equal opportunities and so on - that large numbers of people (mostly but not only women) found to be really quite reasonable demands. As those more reasonable demands have largely if not wholly been achieved through government legislation, then it's left the various gender Feminisms exposed and more clearly visible.

The other social development of huge significance is the impact of Feminism in academia, education and social services where they predominate. Pior to the 1960s and 1970s, there was much more political diversity among faculty in even subjects like Education and Sociology that are simply unimaginable now. Personally, I think this has had a deleterious effect on academia and education, but the impact has been huge.

People talk a lot about Women's and Gender Studies, but the strong influence in Feminism is felt all across the humanities and social sciences and many of the graduates from there go into public sector jobs where in turn they influence policy decisions. As many of these policies have an overtly political agenda, it arouses sharp reactions from anyone who takes unkindly to seeing unelected political activists pushing for change.

(In case you ask, I don't have links to support these points - this is my view and I don't really want to commit time to seeking out the sources. The fact that I don't provide them for you does not mean they do not exist, however.)

You want to fix it you have to undo it. Giving women franchise was a mistake. YOU'RE suffering from the delusion that we can fix things with anything less than a full restore from backup. There is a reason why strongly patriarchical society is ubiquitous and its because its the only model that FUCKING WORKS.
