Maybe, I don't know, but just maybe, the reason that men are opting out is that it's no longer worth it. Work hard to get passed up for quotas. Work hard and still get zero respect, because it's just expected. Could it be that more men are getting fed up with being to how great they have it while being pushed out, craped on, and generally taken for granted. Nah, couldn't be.

I think the economy is a very complicated species and there are scores of reasons. I think what you say is definately one reason, I just wish people would start talking about it.

American man, cannot confirm, got bills that need paying.

I wish I could afford to stop working ... too much debt, so little time.

A better question would be: what are America's men working for?

Also: not all work is, erm, known by the statistics bureaus. Or the IRS.

Lack of diploma condemns a lot of people to subsistance-level wages, which are a lot easir to achieve off the books.

As I mentioned to another commenter, the economy / job market is very complicated and I think there are many reasons for this being the case. I think your reason is one of scores of reasons. It would be a good idea to talk about the whole problem instead of leaving pieces out.

Lack of work is an issue lots of places. The government around here fly people in from third world countries to take all the factory jobs every year, so they can pay shitty wages. I am not driving an hour and a half each way to go work at walmart or canadian tire or some other shit job like that lol. I didn't learn skilled trades for years to be doing that shit.

Illegal immigrants totally fucked the construction business in the tri-state where I used to live. It was either hire illegal immigrants to compete with every other crew out there with illegal immigrants, or get the fuck out. So I left, I shouldn't have to be a criminal to compete in an honest business, but there it is.

That's why I cringed when Trudeau and Mulclair wanted to bring in lots of new immigrants and that is why some in Britain want to leave the EU.

They say it is because "Locals don't want to work here". No shit, not at the pricepoint and conditions they offer. Who wants to work at a fishfactory, 10+ hours a day, 6 days a week, to break about even after paying the bills? It used to be a decent living, but as almost everywhere outside of wallstreet, wages totally stagnated, while prices of everything else rose steadily.

The construction industry definately plays a big part in the topic of this article. Part of it is what you were taking about, also, the housing bust is another part.

[–]deathdragon5858 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

A big issue is that we did nothing about illegal immigrants before the bust. Not that there was a lot we could do about it if we wanted to. When there was plenty of work for all of us, we just turned a blind eye to it.

You didn't find many illegals working on the jobsites I worked at, other than a few laborers maybe. I worked all high end jobs, mcmansions basically, and I didn't mind them getting the shitty jobs. When all the builders were sitting on houses that weren't selling, and no more was being built, it became an issue. Now we needed to just find work, the crooks were well entrenched, and could outbid us on all the work left.

While there are things that can be done about that poltically, there is nothing you can do about it as one person. Therefore all you can really do is increase your skills in that industry because that is one thing they don't have, high skills.

My flooring skills are maxed out lol. I have actually taken to learn other trades since. Not that it's a huge jump from wood floors to building other wood stuff really. But I have learned framing, tiling, roofing, putting in windows and door frames.

I was the guy you called when you need floors with fancy borders and medallions and herringbone foyers and shit :)

That's good to hear. Guys like you can command a premium. But that stuff is not usually needed in a depression. Hopefully a depression that bad doesn't happen again in our lifetime.

[–]imbecile 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The lower the wage, the more likely workers are to pass up the job altogether.

Yes, men are not working, because the wages are not worth it. Over the last decades most wealth got redistributed to the top. There is not much more wealth to suck out of the American people for the wealthy, so it is not worth it anymore for the rich to pay anyone decently to do so, and it is not worth it anymore for anyone to take such a job.
