He was actually really good, just lacked "spirit" if that makes any sense. He was really great in a technical sense of making it look good, but it was void of any character or flare. That's actually why he was rejected. He was really good, but nothing about him stood out.

Really good, no. Not horrible rather, he came a long way as a hobbyist but lacked certain technical skills; look at the colour palette in his watercolours, the perspective, lack of precision. He came a long way without classic art education, but lagged behind in comparison anyway.

What, from the Wien Academy of Fine Arts? I've seen my fair share– even now it remains as one of the most prestigious Fine Arts schools in the world– even for those with an naturalistic inclination. But if mere naturalistic mimesis would make one a great artist, then we'd have an abundance of very young artistic geniuses because they had a few years of training.
He didn't do bad. But he wasn't good enough to come close to the ultra-competitive environment that Vienna Academy of Fine Art was. He had a good understanding of painting based on photographs of buildings, but struggled with painting urban environments and people– even from photographs, which is rather antithetical to creating an artistic aura of a painting.

Yeah, that one is intellectually dishonest as hell probably made by some Hitlerian larper that doesn't know shit about art or art history, or at least didn't bother beyond googling modern artists and picking ones that are uninteresting to look at through a filtered meme format

Modern art didn't come from an incompetence of mimicking a naturalist depiction, it came from the extreme psychological shifts in our lives in the beginning of industrialization, that attempted doing something more than what photography could do– in fact, photography kind of liberated painting from a ''likeness'' complex that had defined the artistic imperative before. To add, most of modern artists people love to hate probably had mastered the naturalistic art style– which at that point was overripe, not to say that good naturalistic painting wasn't able to synthesize mimesis and symbolism together– see Renaissance painting, for one.
