This happened with my ex. At first he just told me he wasn't close to his family and didn't really elaborate. After several months he told me that both his parents were in prison and that he was physically and sexually abused as a child by a few different family members and that he spent most of his childhood in foster care.

I didn't mind. Obviously that's not something a person wants to share right away with someone they barely know.

That’s tough. If he’s never brought it up to me it almost feels like snooping and might trigger him if it bring it up.

As hard as it would be i think I would wait for him to bring it up on his own but make sure that he knows he can always tell me anything I will listen won’t judge and will support him. Maybe that would encourage him to talk to me about it if he feels like he needs to.

No I wouldn’t be mad that he lied. It’s understandable why someone doesn’t want to talk about such an awful experience and would lie to cover up why their father isn’t around.
