What if it were proven through large scale scientific analysis that men were on average less fit care takers than women?

If that were proven, then what it would mean is, I would except the courts to give custody to women more often than to men.

In other words, I would expect those two averages to line up.

However, it would not mean that any individual man is less fit than any individual woman.

The example that I've used many times is that of height. There is nothing wrong with noting that men tend to be taller than women. That isn't a sexist observation. However, if you have a job that requires a tall person, and knowing that men are taller than women, you discard all the resumes you receive from women, that would be wrong.

If the general rule was scientifically observed ( a big hypothetical to swallow, imo), then noting the observation would not be misandry.

Drawing an as yet unproven conclusion that men are biologically inferior rather than socially conditioned to be inferior care givers would be misandry.

Applying the generalization as a stereotype on to individuals without regards to their individual care-giving fitness would be misandry.

I'm curious where you're going with this OP.

If this were proven then the 'gender is a social construct' theory folks would have some serious explaining to do. If women are naturally better caregivers, then those dreaded 'gender roles' are affirmed. Women would be better off in many cases staying at home and caring for children to improve social outcomes. It also begs the question, if women are better at nurturing the young, what are men better at on average?

Just that out out of a large enough group the public good would be better served by summarily awarding women custody in the case of a separation. Would this be a form of Misandry?

This is why in studies of things like custody outcomes, pay differences, or discrimination, researchers don't assume that perfectly equal outcomes are required for the decisions to be fair.

If the results simply demonstrated that the outcomes were unequal, then there wouldn't necessarily be evidence of "misandry". The research into custody outcomes would need to demonstrate that the outcomes were skewed more than what we would predict based on [the hypothetical] general differences in the parenting ability of men and women.
