First off, you are completely right about the post not belonging here and the use of clearance to get rid of unpopular items. It just appears as though both items are on clearance (or neither is) based on them being in the same location and having price labels that are exactly the same so saying one is on clearance and that’s why it’s cheaper doesn’t really explain this. Now maybe they both suck (and ended up on clearance) but one sucks more than the other so they were marked down different amounts. As far as that goes, it could even be a mistake. I’ve looked at clearance sections where they had the exact same items with different prices on them. I just find it amusing that everyone is referring supply AND demand without realizing it takes both to influence price. There must be high demand AND low supply to drive prices up. High demand alone doesn’t do it. The reason why is simple. If something is readily available (even with high demand) and you sell it cheaper than everyone else, you will sell higher volumes and make more money than those charging more for the item. This is why it typically costs more to buy something from a small mom & pop type store than buying the same object from a large retail chain.

Supply and demand can drive prices up for high demand items (most common result) and prices down for items with low demand but that’s not always the case. More often, items with low demand are considered “specialty” and priced higher than the more common counterparts. Especially since this post is specifically about tools. There are many tools out there with low demand that are priced significantly higher than similar more common tools. Also, as I mentioned previously, when low demand drives prices down it usually done via clearance pricing which doesn’t appear to be the case here. Most stores have special price tags for clearance items. If you still don’t agree with my comment, I have a simple question for you. Have you ever been shopping for something and been annoyed that you could get it in certain colors (like black or white) for significantly cheaper than a color you really wanted? This is because the more common items can be priced cheaper because combined they generate enough profit to cover the company’s overhead.
