I recently listened to a discussion about the pay disparity. It stated that there is a gap but it is not as wide as people state. Further, the gap involves many factors, as we can all imagine. The main thing that their research found was that the biggest cause of the gap is that some jobs give a lot of “temporal freedom.” Which is to say they allow people to flex shifts, work from home, leave and return to work at irregular times. A lot of these jobs are occupied by women. Some women seek these jobs because they want to take care of children or other family members. And some people just want a job that is fulfilling.

In my personal experience with unions, construction, military work, and ship yard work, pay is determined based on many factors. Time with employer, skill level, certification to name a few. When i built ships, most of the foremen preferred female employees because “in their experience, women didnt try to muscle the welding equipment in the same way that men did and as a result they produced better results” none of us complained to hr about these statements.

All of these jobs have been very strict on attendance and tardiness. My wife has a job as a social worker and is able to flex her hours a lot and also she gets a great sense of fulfillment for being able to enrich the lives of others. The strictness and danger of my jobs have led to me earning an average of 16,000 a year more than my wife.
I am a proponent of equal opportunities for people. Not equal results. I believe that two people doing the same job should be compensated equally. I dont believe that a daycare worker should be payed the same as a crane operator. The responsibility differences dictate otherwise.

Most of those jobs are hostile to female workers and I don't blame them for not entering those fields of work.
