Let's say you are two candidates, one male and one female, looking for a management position (probably in their 30s). The man got preferences his whole career (including education) so his resume would look better. He got promoted better, faster than she did. Also, he has more confidence in himself as a result of greater results from his hard work. Now, years later they are both submitting their resumes with their name/sex redacted. Is it any surprise that the guy get the job? His resume reflects the cumulative advantage that he has enjoyed.
This is the argument for things like affirmative action. It isn't just that "starting today" the playing field will be level. It is that there is a cumulative effect. Before anyone jumps down my throat, I also understand that affirmative action hurts people (white males) who didn't get the cumulative preferences so it is hurting one group of people at the expense of another group even though the individuals being hurt don't necessarily deserve it. I consider affirmative action to be a very bad form of racism itself.

The part that people dont' talk about is if the guy doesn't get the job, he can't just go to the bar and find some chick to latch on to and take care of him until he finds something better. When men fail, we fail hard. Women just get a new boyfriend and complain their oppressed as some strange man they don't care about takes care of them.

You know I wish this lifetime of white male preference would kick in already.
I have had a string jobs since I was 10 years old. Not great jobs. First I started off as a paperboy delivering papers in Canada in the winter at 6am. Then I moved into working at an NHL hockey arena, working on commission carrying drinks and popcorn around the stands. Then I moved into a rewarding fast food career (hot kitchen not counter). Not much female competition for these cushy jobs. I worked because I liked having money and my mom was a single mother and we were not well off.
This got me through until university.
I had great grades but I didn't qualify for any of the many scholarships and bursaries I applied for. Somehow they all went to women or people of colour with lesser grades almost entirely.
Luckily I am in Canada where you don't have to deal with the American college application system. Here if you have acceptable grades you generally get in to where you want to go, and worst case scenario you are wait listed a while. They focus more on making people give up in the first year or so instead of just not letting them in at all.
It was fine though I saved a lot of my money working all those years and living at home and I just kept working, plus student loans.
Fast forward a few years and I managed to juggle everything and did pretty good and graduated with again excellent grades.
Job search job search job search nothing in my area of expertise really wanted to hire men for the entry level positions.
I decided to start my own business. However it was next to impossible to get loans or funding even with all my white male preference. I resorted to starting small and working on the side (online they really couldn't give a damn what gender I was since it was all results based)
Fast forward another 10 years now and its going quite well now with lots of hard work, long hours and sacrificing.
Of course now the government wants their share to redistribute to all those poor people that I guess haven't been getting enough help. Gotta love it.

However there have been many women who have contributed to history and so-forth AND we now live in a society where women have an opportunity to contribute to humanity, yadda yadda.

Well let's follow the logic a little deeper here:
When employers don't know the gender they choose the most qualified. That seems logical to me and fair. Maybe men are more qualified because of their lifetime of preference, if so that would be unfair.
But when employers do know the gender they choose more women eventhough the men are more qualified. Doesn't that mean that women are unfairly being favored just because they are women? Kinda makes the whole women are being denied jobs just because they are women argument invalid. That would also ruin your lifetime of preference idea.

The point of the OP is that men are hired more than women and when gender blind, they are still hired more than women. There is no doubt that companies hire some women to make things look "more balanced" and head off future criticism. I started my career as a CCS graduate at a major tech company and without a doubt the men did the heavy hauling. In fact, one woman I worked with who was pretty weak got her name put on a patent application where it was nothing more than a gift to her, not based on her contribution.
This also exists at many universities where, without a doubt, Asians are being discriminated against just like how Jews were discriminated against up through the 50s and 60s at elite universities. In this case, it is probably Caucasians who are getting a boost to their applications:
