- A wife is "weaker" and not "equal" in several respects. Emotionally, physically, mentally.

- This means that, like a king in charge of the well-being of his citizens, that you are a good leader if you take this weakness into account.

- This is why a husband should be obeyed and respected, just like a king. You can't have responsibility without authority.

Does this mean God will not hear or answer our prayer?

The common theme throughout the Scriptures is that God hears the cries of the oppressed and down trodden.

If you're not honoring her and treating her in an understanding way, presumably you're not "treating her as your own body" as it says in Ephesians 5. Likewise, "a fellow heir in the grace of life" coupled with the duty of 'loving her for the purpose of sanctification' means you aren't leading/loving her as Christ would.

The prayers hindered can be interpreted thus in two different ways.

Your prayers are hindered and possibly unanswered because you're acting similar to lording authority over your wife -- Matthew 20:25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord over them, and those in high position exercise authority over them. 26 It is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become prominent among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave
Alternatively, if you're not living as God wants and thus He won't answer prayers as God tends to answer prayers in alignment with His kingdom (e.g. meaning that your prayers are selfish and thus not in alignment with Him and thus won't answer them).

What does it mean to live with your wife in an understanding way?

Ironically, be against feminism which treats men and women the same, except with different body parts. Men and women are different and have different needs. Women tend to be weaker spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically, so attending to their needs there and leading effectively.

Likewise, there are different Biblical marital roles and responsibilities which you each should fulfill to meet God's desire for each spouse (love and respect, headship and submission, etc.).

I often note that the way we relate with our spouse is a physical representation meant to point us toward understanding the spiritual relationship we're meant to have with Christ. Is it any surprise, then, that I can predict with great accuracy what a man's weaknesses in his walk with God are by the way his wife treats him? Women follow their husband's example. If you show no respect to God, she will show no respect to you. If she's nagging and pestering you to do things for her, it's probably the case that your time spent with God is nagging and pestering him to do things for you. I'm sure you can add to the list yourself.

If you can't have a quality relationship with your spouse, it's hard to imagine you're going to have a quality relationship with God either. That's why passages like 1 Timothy 3:5 or 1 John 4:20 make it clear that we have to have a healthy relationship with those who are physically present in our lives as the pathway to having a healthy relationship with a spiritual God in his spiritual Kingdom.

If a man is oppressive toward his wife and not loving toward her, he's not following in the direction of those passages. Granted, the way I'd define "oppressive" is drastically different from the way most women today will claim to be "oppressed" - so take that word in a biblical context, not a modern cultural definition.

I've always wondered what this meant. I guess it means God doesn't listen to all prayers specifically bad husbands prayers. You must be a good husband if you want your prayers answered.

Notice there's no comment of the man's prayers will be hindered for treating her any less than a co heir. If you treat her like she's less than you, you will suffer
