Hi ladies,
I don't comment here often. But I really enjoy lurking on your site. It's lovely to see the positive attitudes you all have about relationships.
I'm not exactly looking for advice, but curious to hear your thoughts on what I'd call the "absent minded professor " dynamic in my marriage.
My husband is literally a professor, and quite absent minded. He is a wonderful, wonderful husband and father. I love him and don't really want him to change. But sometimes I struggle feeling like all the practical details of our lives fall to me.
It's mostly little things. If a drawer breaks, he doesn't take care of it. If there's a wobble in the table, he doesn't fix it. He just works around it. When our kids need new boots, he doesn't notice. When they need haircuts, he doesn't notice. I'm the one who makes them all get dressed, wash up, clear the table, etc. Meanwhile he is working out the theory of something or another in his head.
Now, I know this all sounds like standard mothering work anyway. It's just that honestly, I am kind of an absent minded professor type too! And sometimes I wish that he could share more of the practical work with me, so that I could free up my mind for more, well, thinking. I used to write, and theorize, myself. Now I am always thinking about boots and toothbrushes.
I am mostly a SAHM but I do some research work on the side. It's pretty dull work honestly, and some times really time consuming. His job pays the vast majority of our bills but we cant quit afford for me to quit.
I know I sound like I'm complaining. I don't mean to. I love my husband and my life. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this dynamic, or if anyone has found a way to become more of a practical woman, without losing their original, day dreaming self : )
I hope this makes sense!
