My partner and I have planned to get engaged this spring/summer/early fall for a while now. We have kept this private. His mother has now been harassing us non stop about engagement telling us we need to go ring shopping (We already have but I don't want to say that), and that he has "up to 4 months to propose." Every time we see her it's "did you go shopping?" She has bought me items to store and clean jewelry for "When i have a ring."I have no idea where she got that 4 months timeline from either. She nags him non stop every time he makes any large purchase and says "oh you're gonna get that instead of a ring." It is ironic because her timeline is actually very close to ours, but now all the excitement and mystery feels gone. I know now when we do get engaged it's just gonna be "took ya long enough" or other comments instead of genuine surprise. I don't want our special life moments to be associated with nagging or feeling forced. I've asked my partner to have a conversation with her, and he informed her we already have gone ring shopping and that it is coming, but now the comments have gotten worse and more frequent. She has also already planned out ideas for our wedding and told us we are having a destination. She is terminally ill and anxious to see her grandchildren before her illness progresses, so on top of the frustration I am riddled with feelings of guilt. How can I manage this better and not let it get me upset so easily? I don't act angry, but I do tell my partner that her constant comments take away the mystery and excitement of it all, and it make it all feel like a chore now. I make it about us and how I want our relationship to never feel forced or like a chore.
