So my new partner just got back from a big holiday and has the flu, the poor guy is tearing his throat up coughing but still asked me to come around for hangouts and chill last night so we could catch up. He's always so generous offering me drinks and etc because I'm a broke student... he also brought me some awesome gifts back from his trip, and so I jump at the opportunity to return the favour where I can by being cheerful and helpful. We had a good evening and I didn't smother him cause he had a sore throat and couldnt talk too much. But things were positive.

But today I guess it was all too much for him and I realise I should have gone home early. Every time i offered to help him out in some small way he absolutely refused. I offered to make up a big fruit bowl for his health ... or chicken soup... to buy him medicine... or to tidy up the kitchen after he made brekky.... small offers where i didnt pout if he said "no". I kept myself occupied on my laptop and gave him space. He gets pretty hung up on feeling bad for asking me to leave, he claims i roll my eyes an take it personally and he feels bad about asking for space. From my point of view i see him barely 24hrs a week and it feels like im at his beck and call and that i have to leave the moment he feels like it. I feel this would be fixed by cohabitating and having more activities to occupy myself. but im getting off track...

The afternoon ended with him just asking me to go home, and basically accusing me of wanting to stick around just so i could keep having free drinks. This really really upset me, it just blows my mind that he completely overlooked all the nice things i offered to do and the chill positivity i tried to bring to the hangout. I tried to explain my position as non-accusingly as i could but nah.

I seem to have a pattern of this happening with partners .... Sometimes I wonder if they do this so they can keep the higher ground and always have one over me, they never want me to pay them back even though i'd love nothing more than to support them. What should my frame of mind be RPW? I just want to be a good helper and am conscious of beingy too "needy" in my giving and expecting things back, but it always backfires. Please advise :(
