I stumbled upon these lectures by Ajahn Brahm that I found really useful. His teachings tend to align with TRP but with a less cynical edge. This particular lecture talks about Destiny, Fate, or Free Will. Its an hour long so I made some quick notes for you guys.

On fate, destiny, or free will

  • Nothing is fated/meant to be..you make it be
  • There is no destiny or path\t
  • Karma is what you're doing right now, not what you did in the past
  • Its about putting it together with what you've already got
  • Trouser story
  • He buys green velvet trousers to be different from his classmates
  • Goes to a concert and sees everyone with velvet trousers
  • What he thought was free will wasn’t so free after all
  • We are deluded into thinking there’s free will in the world today.
  • There only exists “free won’t”. You only have the power to stop things and say no
  • The insight/ability to say no and restrain is powerful..and few have it
  • When you start saying no to “will” you find that you actually have true freedom
  • “I wan’t it but I’m not going to have it… no”
  • You can stop temptation, grief, anger, lust, and desire in its tracks
  • In our modern world we haven't learned to say no
  • Free won’t makes it so you're not controlled by our advertising, culture, and hormones
