For me, it was just one partner until Feb 2012. Since then, I'm up to 13. I've been steadily applying RP principles and improving myself.

Each of us is a different story and the context of our successes (or lack thereof) are wildly divergent.

The life time average is misleading as you need to account for aging and cohort effects. Best thing to do is look at the here and now. And I think the most relevant comparison metric is number of different partners in the last 12 months for people not in a LTR.

Looking at 18-42 year olds, never married, not currently defacto, never had sex with men: median last 12 months is 1, top 20% is 3+, top 1% is 15+. No effect of age at all within this cohort.

If you are still interested in life time partners: of those meeting the inclusion criteria above: 23.8% of 18-22 year olds, 44.0% of 23-27 year olds, 59.4% of 28-32 year olds, 60.8% of 33-37 year olds; 58.3% of 38-42 year olds have 7 or more lifetime partners. Need to keep but in mind the proportion of the population meeting the inclusion criteria diminishes with age though. If you examine all exclusively behaviourally heterosexual men, independent of relationship status, its 24.3% by 23, 42.3% by 28, 49.8% by 33, 54.0% by 38, and 55.8% by 43.

(all numbers quotes are based on really quick tabulations of the NSFG 2011-2013).

The 7 lifetime partners is low. Due to the poll taking into account the older generations that didnt usually sleep around as much as is common now.

Not including prostitutes - 33, 2 LTR's (1 was 2 years, I cheated constantly, lol, the other was 1 year, cheated 3 times) about 5 were what I'd call I was dating or a "Girlfriend" the rest were pickups and one night stands/FWBs.

Prostitutes included, gotta be close to 50.

It really depends on tour SMV, geographic location, age, income, status, height, ethnicity, weight, tone of voice, experience etc.... asking people for their numbers of sexual partners on the internet is going to get you unreliable data because people want to seems cool and protect their ego's.
