All progress in society is made by those who choose to be unrealistic. I encourage you to be unrealistic in your thoughts, your desires, and your actions. Pursue your dreams and passions no matter how unrealistic they may seem. There’s a common cliche, aim for the stars and if you miss you’ll hit the moon. Well, when your aims are not just high, they are unrealistic, you are bracing yourself for monumental improvement and progress.

Will Smith once said, “Being realistic is the most commonly traveled road to mediocrity.” When you put up a fight for what you want, regardless of what others tell you, when you aim for the stars, that’s when you inspire and propel yourself into greatness.

Settling is for suckers and those who live in fear. Rather, be unrealistic. You see a HB 10? Go and approach her. You want to have a million dollars in the bank? Put your head to the grindstone and start saving, investing, and making money. You want to benchpress 200 pounds? Hit the gym, start off with what you can handle, and build yourself up.

Will Smith had a great analogy. He said it’s unrealistic to flip a switch and lights come on. He said it’s unrealistic to bend a piece of metal and fly people over an ocean in that metal. These are unrealistic. Fortunately Edison, Tesla, the Wright Brothers, and others didn’t think so. They may have been discouraged, mocked, even laughed at, but they believed in the unrealistic, and we are fortunate today because of this belief to pursue their unrealistic dreams.

I’m 5’ 5”. Everyone tells me that I am destined to date someone my height or shorter. Well, through a well balanced lifestyle and solid game, I will prove them wrong and one day find my “giraffe”. I have already dated a girl an inch taller than me because of succinct game.

A family member of mine graduated college recently and was told to get the first job they were offered. To be realistic. That they didn’t have enough work experience to land a job in the most elite, most prestigious company in their field. Well you can guess what happened. This family member chose to be unrealistic, pushed away the naysayers, and through grit, wit, and ambition, they landed their dream job straight out of college making a salary most people spend years trying to achieve once graduating.

It was the wrestling state championship. My opponent was a returning state champion. He had an undefeated season. All bets were on him. Meanwhile, I was a replacement for a wrestler who had a serious injury midway into the season. No one was putting their money on me. People were telling me to just have fun and be proud that I had got into the finals. Well I blocked them out. I chose to be unrealistic, and I told myself I would pin his ass in the first round. I drilled my attack strategy, my defense, my escapes, and my standups. I was not afraid of him. I had worked too hard for it to end here. Pumped, I entered the ring, we shook hands, and the match began. A little over a minute in he went for a double leg takedown, I got him in a cradle, and at 1:11 he was pinned. It was the biggest upset of the season. Because I chose to be unrealistic.

Be unrealistic. Have goals, choices, and endeavors that others may say are impossible but you know you will achieve. Put your head down, focus, and fight for that unrealistic goal of yours. Ignore the naysayers. Pretty soon, if you show enough strength, courage, and resilience, you will make the unrealistic realistic.
