No, he's not. He's hiding from his routine media obligations because he'll look like an absolute chump at the press conferences after losing to the guy opposite him on 10 days notice. He wouldn't be able to bluster his way through a media tour without taking a major hit to his brand so he figured he'd just dodge it and spin the whole thing. UFC wasn't having it and he pulls a fake-retirement diva move.
Now he lost a payday because he was too chicken to do both media and then fight Nate in his own words. Or his delicate ego wouldn't allow him to sit through press conferences across a guy who sonned him on 10 days notice. One or the other. Either way he looks like a bitch.
The purpose of monk mode isn't to hide your face after a setback. May as well say Ronda went into monk-mode.

He's become obsessed with the loss. He wants to ensure that he doesn't lose again. But it's unlikely he'll be able to beat Diaz, a black belt in jiu jitsu.
Mcgregor maintained his frame but ultimately UFC held out and still rejected his statement and the fight has been canned.
He took a risk and a gamble and it didn't payoff, yet. Watch this space.

"Obsessed with the loss" means so little. McGregor was "obsessed with movement" and it didn't show at all. All top fighters are obsessed with losses. Most of them don't get an undeserved immediate rematch, though.
McGregor didn't want to do the chore of press conferences when he had nothing to gain. It's really that simple. I wouldn't want to do it either. His portrayal of it is the most obvious spin anybody could possibly put on it. His promotional game always makes sense. LOL @ "he's obsessed with the loss" like he's some savant-fighter or something.
His post-fight reaction was that he only needed to make a few small adjustments and now he's behaving like he has a herculean task ahead of him. Imagine how he'd react if the roles were reversed and he was talking about an opponent who did what he did. "He went roonin and I'm here!" Just like how he ridiculed "panicked wrestlers" and then turned into one.
People are worshipping a guy who is a brilliant self-promoter but spectacularly overrated as a paragon of masculinity. Dude made his name off fighting guys smaller than him and auto-fellatio.

There are tons in innumerable fields. It is all about embodying the principles of perseverance, self-assurance, and integrity in your chosen craft.
Conor wouldn't be the guy in MMA, imho. He would ridicule his exact mirror if he were on the other side of the fence. He went to painful lengths to fight guys smaller than himself but now he plays the hero card ("longer, taller, heavier opponent") when he's fighting a guy who would fight in his natural weightclass.
Nate Diaz is a LW and Conor is a natural lightweight. He and his team (since I assume he doesn't make these decisions alone obviously) are master manipulators. Nate Diaz is taller and has a smaller reach advantage than Conor had against most of his opponents but they're pitching it as a David vs Goliath matchup. Conor is giving up zero lean pounds. Shorter stockier fighters NEVER whine about their size disadvantage unless they're used to enjoying that same precise advantage and their style is predicated on it.
Conor McGregor is a bit of a fraud, honestly. From a purely sporting perspective.

There's nothing to gain by sitting in a media press conference and having your ass handed to you. He's already lost face, why waste more time with media bullshit? At the end of the day the question isn't about humility or "being chicken"; the question is simply about how he can best prepare a comeback.
Why sit in media interviews to be constantly reminded of your failure and being interrogated on how you plan to make a comeback when you could instead be investing that time and energy in the gym for your comeback. Something that will actively make a difference?

Exactly. He's not "going into monk-mode." He's avoiding media because it'll be an unpleasant chore that will make him look bad but is instead pretending it's because refuses to divert energy from training. See the difference?
Guarantee he'd have done media if he was fighting an infinitely more formidable opponent than Nate if he was riding a winning streak.
