I had a GF who had a few tattoos when we started dating. At first they weren't all over the place and were those sort of vintage pinup tattoos. It was really hipster hot. She was going to school to be an elementary teacher.

Years later, I see her. She's got tattoos EVERYWHERE. It was ridiculous. She went from this hot hipster to something trashy. When I asked her about her teaching prospects she complained about how difficult it was finding a job and blamed a number of things other than the fact she's tattooed up all over the place and parents don't want their kids around her.

I have tats myself, but I can hide every single one of them with a T-shirt. You won't know if I have tats unless I want you to know.

People, especially in a professional setting, with visible tats is an indicator that they do things on impulse without considering the future consequences. That's part of their track record, and now you have to wonder if said record will continue or not.

The tattoo argument is interesting. I think it signals risk seeking/taking behavior, and again, it shows little concern for future consequences.

I think women find this incredibly sexy in men, because women are attracted to men exhibiting risk seeking behavior. So, in their solipsistic minds, they assume that if they think it's hot in men, it must therefore be hot to men. So they get a tattoo that they're convinced is "cute."

I had an argument with a plate just a few weeks ago about this at the beach. She pointed out a woman with the ugliest fucking tattoo on the back of her leg. She goes, "oooooh that's so cute, I want that one."

I told her that I though it was hideous.

She replied, "what are you talking about? It's so cute! It doesn't matter what you think, I'd do it for me..."

I said, "Don't be surprised if you ugly yourself up, quality men won't be interested."

The stigmas attached aren't overwhelmingly true- tattoos don't make you a slut, a party girl, adventurous, risk seeking.. but my god if my brain doesn't assume this anyway when I see one. I just can't help it. I'm totally turned off by them. I assume this is subconsciously.

Having read the thread, it's not the tattoos that are the problem. The real red flags are the indications that she'll use the classroom as a stage and the children as an audience for her own attention seeking; that she'll be disrespectful of parents' opinions of what their children should be exposed to; and that she'll be unable to take guidance or criticism from colleagues.

In wanting to expose her tattoos, she's like a teenager simultaneously flouting social norms and whining that nobody takes her seriously. She says it would be a good life lesson for seven year olds to be exposed to that attitude.

She talks about being respectful of different opinions, but she's shown in the thread that she only listens to opinions she agrees with. Anyone who disagrees with her, she pattern-matches to a caricature baddy from Dead Poets' Society, and responds to them with condescending passive aggression:

A dog that doesn't bark is that there's no sign of the teacher being interested in the world beyond her own reflection in her students' eyes. If she was saying that she's passionate about introducing say Charles Dickens to her students, but those dull administrators won't let her, I might conclude that she's a good teacher. A good teacher is supposed to get their students interested in the world. In the triangle of teacher-student-world, the teacher is the least important element, so any sign of ego or attention seeking in the teacher is a worry. And of course the most important element is the student, but what's best for the student is to be shown the world and given the skills to flourish in the world, not to "seek their own truth" and be shown how to be a narcissist by a narcissist.

I seriously don't get why people do this. It reminds me of a funny line in a Dave Chappelle skit, "Everybody wanna be a nigga, but nobody wanna be a nigga", meaning that everybody wants to act like a poor, low-class, uneducated person but they don't want to face the consequences of actually being such a person.

This is a really bizarre phenomenon that became popular in recent decades. Before, people would try to imitate the rich and successful, but then it all changed. Poor urban black kids had to wear baggy jeans because their parents couldn't afford to replace them as they grew, and then people who had enough money started imitating it. Kids are though proper English and school, but they choose to speak in street vernacular. Gangsters put tattoos on themselves as both a warning to others (i.e. you know I am in a gang, so if you fuck with me, my gang will go after you) and as a way of identifying themselves to other gangs (once you are in, you are in "for life" because it is hard to get rid of the tattoo). And then ordinary people started plastering themselves with tattoos. And of course, as these people grow older, they don't want to be treated like a poor, uneducated, low class person when they have been acting like one all their teenage and young adult lives. What the fuck is this shit with middle class people imitating poor people?

Not surprisingly others draw negative conclusions. And the people doing it want others to draw negative conclusions, until they realize at they are going to be poor and all the high quality people refuse to associate with them, in which case it starts to become a self fulfilling prophecy where imitating a poor person so much causes the person to actually become one.

You fuckin got that right. It is incredibly rare for a woman to think ahead, plan something out, and understand the actions they take today will affect tomorrow. The only women I have known who can do that run businesses effectively, those who cannot plan are not effective.

Guys if you are planning on getting tattoos, then your limit should be "can not be seen, while wearing a collared polo shirt.

I have a few tattoos and I Plan on getting a massive chest piece done, but there is no way anyone in a professional setting will ever see them.

Women with massive amounts of colourful, constantly visible tattoos are to be avoided like the plague.

They are usually unstable attention whores. Want verification of that ? Spend some time in /r/gonewild and see how many of them are heavily tattooed (hint, lots of them)

I teach in a private school for teenagers with cognitive issues, I have one full sleeve down to my wrist, a half sleeve, and my ears are stretched to 12mm.

Brother is a chemistry teacher at a public high school, he's got two full sleeves, a neck tattoo, and his ears are stretched to an inch.

Neither of us had any issues becoming employed.

It's true there are still going to be many employers who discriminate, but you can still get a good job. You're not going to be stuck flipping burgers your entire life.

I have one rather large tattoo. However, it is on my ankle. Shoes and pants cover it up so it will never be a consideration in terms of employment. I considered this as a potential problem before getting it, and made sure that it was in a place for which I wouldn't face employment issues.

I do wonder though if men and women are perceived differently in regards to tattoos.
