I wasn't old enough in the 80's to have seen or understood it, but I saw that movie about 7 years ago, and it was the most brutal thing I've ever seen.

It's pretty much the ultimate knife in the ribs for anyone that's been friendzoned hopelessly.

The movie would have been absolutely terrible if it wasn't for the dark turns. It reminds me of mistakes I made about life and women in High School. If Gary had any kind of spine, none of this would have happened.

I just found the ending scene on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYSOjuGdmvI

Yeah, it really smacks you hard. You get this 90 minute blend of teen comedy and lovey dovey stuff and then WHAM, serious RP reality crammed down your face right when you're expecting pablum. I saw it when I was around 17 and realized vividly that this was everything I was doing wrong with girls, and turned my dating life around 180 degrees from then on. While all the 80's trappings are going to be alien to young guys today, this is one film that I think every teen guy should watch, just for the eye opening experience.

What they didn't show was Gary hanging himself immediately after. Dude has no chance of recovering from that.

You're right, everyone should see this before they get wrapped up in something, and it becomes them.

What! He helped her get an abortion and supported her after she treated him like crap and got knocked up by another guy? I never fell that low even in my lowest, beta time.

I actually had a girl I liked start to show interest in me, and try to get me to fall for her, after she had never shown any interest in me before. She was flirting to me, inviting me to her social circles and several of her friends gave me subtle hints to get me to start dating her.

Something seemed very wrong so I looked at a gift horse in the mouth, got one of her friends very drunk and found out that she had gotten knocked up by another guy. She was trying to sucker me into being the daddy and think that I was the actual father since she wouldn't get an abortion. I told her that she should try to get her support from the baby's father and she had the most shocked look on her face that I found out.

Now she's living the life of a single mom and last time I saw her or her friends they treated me like I was a deadbeat for not taking care of the baby like they thought I should have, and an idiot for not accepting the wonderful gift that was her. It was like I should have been honored to finally be able to have her after she was ruined. I think they should be called superhamsters.

Unfortunately starting to show some spine hasn't started some huge transformation to turn me into a chick magnet.

Don't expect big changes overnight. I started showing spine in late high school but it wasn't till college that I started getting regular girlie action, and then later when I got a good job and bought my own house it was like holy fuck, where did all these women come from? Whenever I talk to young guys I always stress, get a job, get a better job, get a car, get a house, make a life for yourself, and DON'T worry about women. You get all that shit together and they'll find you.

Also, sounds like you dodged a fucking bullet and a half there, mate. Treating you like a bad guy for not "fathering" her baby is pretty damned hilarious. Good on you for not falling for that.

Trojans help prevent unwanted pregnancy, yet I wonder how Sarah Jessica Parker fits into all of this.

Also, he made a huge sacrifice to pay for her abortion, selling his expensive VCR and electronics, which in those days were big bucks. He's not just driving home in the rain, there are also tears rolling down his cheeks. This is a movie which is mostly a goof-ball comedy like American Pie, and ends on such a tragic note. Its really an ambitious idea for a movie and its a shame Hollywood won't even touch a script for bold ideas like this movie.

edit: here's the scene where he sacrifices everything he can to pay for her abortion

IIRC, our first VCR cost nearly $3,000.

Very accurate depiction of how it really ends for betas.

On a side note, those eyebrows need some serious plucking.

[–]jolly--roger 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hey, it was the 80's

[–]kingssman 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This why the #1 part of taking the pill is to learn to let go. Even Barney from how I met your mother had a story like Gary's. That beta realization turned him around into the sex machine pua he is.

It takes a hurt like that to realize that women make bad choices, and will continue to make bad choices as the sweet and pretty girls will fall for the asshole.

Just recognize that girls want and like sex, and they want it from the stud alpha and not the cuddletime nice guy beta.

Am I the only one who noticed the (unintentional) lesson in all of these movies? Consistently, the wimpy loser ends up with the pretty girl against all odds... but the handsome jock:

a) already fucked her

b) ends up fucking her hot friends after the credits roll

All those movies did was reinforce my desire not to be the "lovable loser".

[–]Elonine 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Reminds me of this scene from the end of "Wet Hot American Summer" (Hilarious movie if you're into stupid spoof comedy)

It's interesting that these days this sort of ending can only happen in a spoof comedy, though...

[–]anotherthrowawaybiff[S] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ha! So true. Although, no girl would ever be that honest in real life, unfortunately.

[–]through_a_ways 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People immerse themselves in fiction to escape real life.

Unfortunately, most people are unable to keep fictional expectations in fiction where they belong, and end up having them spill over into their real life. This especially holds true when the fictional story is more "compatible" with the viewer's life. (Harry Potter is more compatible with teenagers than LOTR, RomComs more compatible than Pixar movies, etc.)

Ultimately, I think everyone ends up being a bit worse for the wear from it, whether it be the bend-over beta who never got the girl, or the 12 year old kid who never got his Hogwarts letter.

[–]rapey_raperson 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like a good movie to watch when you start dating someone. If she empathizes with Karen, pump her and dump her.

[–]dr_rj_vindalu 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Somehow I knew that was the movie you were referencing, even before I read the post. God that made me feel bad. Sadly at that time the point of it all was sort of lost on me and I just thought, wow, what a bitch, that'll never hapen to me though. About 4 years later it did.

[–]anotherthrowawaybiff[S] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Way back in high school, I spent months trying to be "best friends" with the Girl of my Dreams, and eventually got her to go to the prom with me. Where she skipped out to make out with another guy in the parking lot. True story. I left her at the prom to find her own way home and picked up another girl there to spend the evening with. About a week later I saw this movie and just thought, holy shit, that's exactly how I'd been behaving. Decided then and there to never do that again, and changed my whole approach. I'm glad the director ended this like he did, because I bet there was probably studio pressure to give it a standard happy ending, but instead you get a gut punch that sticks with you 20 years later.

[–]bigyellowtwinki 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I looooove endings like that! For movies, anyway. In a way I'm glad I was just incel in high school, I think my fragile ego wouldn't have been able to take a reality punch like that.

[–]Petrarch1603 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is a great, albeit flawed movie and the twist ending makes it quite unique. I heard it was based on an Israeli movie and there were lots of sequels.

However, there are some weird scenes that didn't age well. For example there's a scene where all the guys in the entire school get in line and measure their dicks to see who is the biggest, also the scene with the nasty prostitute is kinda flat. I highly recommend it, but just know it gets kinda weird in some parts.

A good buddy of mine crushed on one girl all through school. For all three years of our high school, he chased one girl and one girl only, and she was an older Senior who would only date college guys. He was a popular, good looking dude and I knew of at least a dozen other girls who practically threw themselves at him, but all he ever wanted was the unattainable one. I've wondered sometimes where he is today, and if he ever looks back and regrets all the fun he could have been having back then, but wasn't.

I never crushed on hot blond 10's. Too much damn trouble. I've always thought the sweet spot in women lies in the 5-7 range. Nice enough to be attractive, but not so much that they're full of themselves or have a badly warped sense of entitlement. It helps that I tend to find women who are a little goofy looking to be more attractive than generic pretty faces.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Romcoms are garbage, but kudos to this one for not settling for a BS beta ending.

They're based on girls' fantasies of how they would like to be pursued by the guys they are already interested in, so at the very least they're missing one crucial step: building attraction/chemistry. Once you've done that, you have a choice of falling into her frame and having her leave you once she's bored or making her fall into your frame so you can lead the relationship.

[–]Thors_Cock 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was never the nice guy, thank god for that. But I was definitely influenced by all the absolutely shitty romantic comedies, and the general shitty tropes in modern television.

This is the sort of stuff that I wish I had seen when I was younger.

[–]anotherthrowawaybiff[S] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"If you're only servile enough and willing to do absolutely anything for them, eventually you'll get the girl." = The message of 99% of romcoms. The funny thing is that even women seem to be turning on this approach, witness how they've actively been redefining terms like "creepy". Creepy used to be the guy who sat in your yard staring at your window all night long for months, but now they use creepy to describe the guy who is just trying to be friendly to them in hopes of a date. "He thinks that if he does nice things for me, I'll dispense sex." I've read that often on /askwomen, and it's funny how that's exactly what romcoms tell guys to do to get the girl.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High features a nearly identical plot, with a slightly less brutal treatment of the beta.

In that film, the beta (Ratner) winds up with the girl (Stacy), but they have yet to consummate the relationship. He manages to avoid paying for the abortion, instead the alpha (Damone) and the girl split those costs.

[–]anotherthrowawaybiff[S] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, Fast Times was pretty similar. I've always thought that Fast Times was the most accurate presentation of life during my high school years. Everybody's nuts over The Breakfast Club, but that was just an adult's fantasy of what an 80's teen's life was like. Fast Times was the reality.

I kind of have to wonder which of the guys really got off easier, though, between Last American Virgin and Fast Times. True, Gary threw away a lot of money and got burned, but he learned a powerful lesson about life and relationships. Ratner, by contrast, gets the girl but she won't have sex with him because she wants him to "respect" her after she's been dumped by the cool dude. He's in for a relationship where she pulls all the strings and he jumps for her. I never really felt very happy for the dude by the end of that, because I walked out with the feeling that she was going to fuck him over somehow eventually.
