It is often heard on TRP that motivation is irrelevant and instead you should persue discipline.
I disagree.
Motivation means 'reason' etymologically; why you do something. A desire that you need to fulfill.
Discipline consists in suppressing a desire in order to allow something else to arise.
Can you see the relation between both?
There are also different kind of motivations, and depending where they come from the strength in them is different.
Let's say you are 25 years old and don't feel like lifting the day your LTR dumps you because she found the Chad she's been looking for.
Of course you still hit the gym because you are not a fucking faggot. That's discipline; suppression of your desire to stay home and cry in your room.
Now let's put it in a different perspective.
Imagine that 10 years earlier you were a loser and, all of a sudden and out of luck, you found a girl that likes you. Everything goes well for a month and BAM: she breaks your heart.
You experience the crippling anxiety, the panic attacks and lack of sleep due to emotional pain but end up reflecting and finally overcome the situation.
Considering that you went through this process, you may develop a deep motivation to succeed in your relationships from now on.
It's like the kid who was abandoned by his parents and tries so hard to build a family when he becomes an adult.
This is true motivation, that's why we often say on TRP that 'A man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor'.
That is the reason Discipline may provide temporary success by repressing feelings but is not ideal for long term.
Discipline and motivation are still compatible, like day and night, hell and heaven.
Answer yourself: What's my mission in life? What do I feel when I work on it?
If you only practice discipline when you work on your mission, failing becomes very likely as there is no true emotional force to back up the effort.
I don't need discipline to lift because I know that not doing it makes me feel like shit, reminds me of my past physical insecurities and being called weak by my own rugby teammates.
So say thanks to those experiences, people and feelings and get shit done.
