100% agree. I'm sure a good majority of college students know already that it is a scam, but they go anyways b/c so many employers still believe that degrees are mega-super-necessary and they aren't aware of very many viable alternatives. Like it or not, many places will still toss your resume in the trash if you don't have one...and you can forget about moving overseas too since most countries outside the U.S won't give you citizenship without one either. Really sucks if you want to live in a less feminist culture someday. Just frequent '/r/iwantout' if you don't believe me...

The debt burden of becoming a doctor or lawyer is obscene, with the latter facing limited job prospects and the former facing stiffer competition for residencies.

Here's NYU: Estimated 2013-2014 Tuition, Fees and Expenses

School of Medicine Class of 2017

 Estimated Costs

Tuition and Fees $51,060

Books And Supplies $1,200

Room and Board $13,980

Personal $3,600

Health Insurance $4,655*

Loan Fees $404**

TOTAL $74,900

Per year. For 4 years, and:

Almost all the students pay for it through loans, unless they have some assistance from their families. Very, very few students get aid in the form of grants or scholarships for medical school.

Then tackle undergraduate debt onto that number.

But, remember, right after medical school, you are definitely not making good money to pay down that debt. Say you continue on to your residency at NYU:

PGY 3: $66,487

PGY 4: $68,685

Speaking as a young premed, if I'm fortunate enough to get accepted to med school, I may go the ROTC route. They pay for your med school on a per year basis in exchange for military service after your schooling's done. It makes sense given I'm tentatively planning on trauma surgery, and I'm not settling down until age 35 anyway. Also, it's a life experience, y'know?

I will agree that medicine, law, and engineering are not and will not be as good as they once were, though they're still among the best jobs you can get where you're often the employee and not the employer (entrepreneurship is about as RP as it gets as far as earning money goes, and even if I get my MD, I still want to be an entrepreneur at some point in my life).

The "problem" with the university system is that in the days before the internet, it was perhaps the only way to be privvy to the cutting-edge sciences of the day, or to network with similarly motivated individuals. Nowadays, a google search can get you either of those things, and the universities know this, so they try to sell you a BS 'experience.'

But no 'experience' is worth even $8,000 a year (my flagship state school), let alone $30,000 dollars a year (some private schools)...

I love medicine, and was accepted to the school above as well as a couple others (mainly recruited for research aspect of medicine - they were interested in my science). I decided not to attend based on the fact that I lacked family assistance and a safety net. One interruption in that pathway and I'd be completely fucked; and, I detest debt.

I then started using my science skills and worked in a lab, and also some hospital settings... but I've since moved to technology, because at least in this field people will pay me reasonable amounts of money for my intellect and skills.

I feel ya. I couldn't see myself taking out the debt described in your earlier post without doing ROTC. Then again, I feel like NYU is probably a premier med school among those in the US. There's always the option of DO schools or even Bahaman schools if you're really desperate.

Like I said though, I think entrepreneurship is the endgame for the RP man. I think deep down, every man wants to be the captain of his own ship, it's just a matter of acquiring the capital (and probably the network) to do so. That's why it makes more sense for it to happen at age 35+ rather than earlier, which is good for me because I'm still an undergrad. I'm working towards the goal, but I'm not freaking out.

College, the bank, other dudes, everyone wants to make you indebted to them. The way to get to where you want is to avoid getting indebted to others--to start using your money the way you want to.

DO schools are just as expensive. Go to a foreign school, and then you'll be second-rate when it comes time to match.

But yes, I concur. I switched fields because I wanted more freedom to conduct my own business.

Thankfully I taught myself enough skills such that a transition doesn't hurt me much.

Best of luck to you. I sincerely hate what we're doing to medical students and doctors when they are needed, and will be needed, more than ever.

Is it a degree related to the job? Nope- any degree will do, and any degree does do.

This is just people with degrees doing their bit to keep degreed people above non-degreed people. It's almost a guild system; get your SAG card.

If you were the average person, and you spent lots of money getting a degree, would you want people who didn't go through all that misery of staying up all night downloading papers from essay-selling websites getting your job just because they were smarter? Fuck no.

You can suffer for 4 years building up an unmatchable skill level in a career path of your choice, and take home great pay rather than go through the chore of school and leave knowing slightly more than you did when you get out.

I don't disagree. The issue is that a lot of companies use college as a proxy measure of stick-to-ive-ness.

You know those books and articles about fabulously successful people who didn't go to college? Someone should do something similar for everyday run of the mill people who did the same and did just fine. Perhaps then more companies would change their policies.

Yep. If there's one thing college CAN do it's help you build a strong network to eventually land a job, but that can only go so far and requires a bit of luck.

Take 4 years to study back-end web development and try to land internships the whole way through at random companies just to learn and be part of the culture, I guarantee you in faster than 4 years you'll land a job that pays silly amounts of money.

If I knew what I knew now at 18 my life path would be entirely different.

An education is important for a well-rounded mind and if you can afford to waste the money, take a philosophy or music major along with your engineering degree.

Education is free, the internet is the most powerful tool for communication that has ever existed in history.

If you want to pay money to go college to get a piece of paper to convince employers that you are qualified and competent to do the work they need to get done, that's great. But don't be duped into thinking any of it was necessary - education is now freely given to anyone who wants to take it.

College isn't about education, it's about getting a degree.

I once had a woman's studies teacher say that the Unites States is way more homophobic than any country in Europe or Asia. Even Russia I asked? Yes even Russia. What surprised me was the confidence with which she said this. She had no doubt in her mind that she was completely right. That is a Liberal Arts education.

i love gavin mcinnes. his book is great.

i also fully endorse /u/2comment's posts on this topic. i have had the same experience. im seeking post grad professional certification (CPA), but I always think I would have much preferred to just been an apprentice of some trade.

at this point, even being a lawyer is fuckin joke for 90% of them. if you arent in a top school, and distinguish yourself, you're just shouldering massive debt for a nearly meaningless job that youll hate. if law is your destiny, then rock that shit, but it isn't a route to success and admiration like it was.

College does have one very useful thing, it will help you expatriate. Getting a working visa in foreign countries can be more difficult without a degree.

It's true that you don't need a degree to make bank, but that doesn't mean it's a worthless investment.

One thing I'd like to point out that this post mentioned: women are the supposed "creators of life".

That's bullshit. Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. They do not create life, they just sustain it.

Men however, produce sperm. Living sperm. Separate living entities from ourselves. We create life, not women.

Hmmm, the italics probably sealed my judgement. I'm drawing my assumption from your stressing an "Us vs. Them" mentality. That is divisive, in its function. Noting difference, of course, must not be construed as something neccesarily "negative" or harsh. I was making an assumption based off of a lot of the attitudes I perceive in this subreddit.

As to your motivations for making the distinctions, you are absolutely correct that I cannot speak to that. Perhaps it is simply intellectual curiosity. Perhaps it is a response to the rather common notion that women are the "bearers of life" (I'm reminded of headlines from several years ago claiming men could be made obsolete wrt reproduction with the advant of new biotechnologies.)
