Well that sounds like a personal problem. I see no shame in outing people who are asshats and assholes. Sounds like she was submissive or passive aggressive and unwilling to confront assholes as they should be confronted. And in the hyper competitive environment described, taking classes with some of the most hyper competitive people on the planet you are wondering why people are being assholes? Fuck lady.

Edward Clarke was a 19th century Harvard Professor who underwent something akin to what happened to Larry Summers. He wanted women to have easier courses and was excoriated for saying that they couldn't do it as men could

Clarke recommended that females be provided with a less demanding education, easier courses, no competition, and "rest" periods so that their reproductive organs could develop. He maintained that allowing girls to attend places such as Harvard would pose a serious health threat to the women themselves, with sterility and hysteria potential outcomes.

He came to his conclusion seeing that women in higher education had less children than normal women, so probably was a correlation-causation scew up which tarnished his otherwise champion of women's rights reputation. He even thought women could attain 'equal eminence' with men, no wonder Larry's not even ceding that possibility made them feminists that mad. Equality had regressed!

And today STEM fields must get rid of hard 'weeding out' courses that are preventing the female talent from reaching its full potential.

College education or any institution of education doesn't mean a crock of shit in the real world. Colleges are a business. This move to get 'gender' equality was a carefully choreographed act by harvard to shift focus to their newer target market, women.

Where you go to school, who you got your certification from, or how much your school costs per semester doesn't hold a candle to willpower and innovation. Men MUST be innovative and provide value in this society. The only thing that is driving women to become masculine is not the presence of intimidating men, its feminism. MEN are not screaming for women to become competent in the business world, feminists are.

My advice would be to leave these women to their devices and start getting laid. We already know what happens to successful business women. They make millions of dollars and then hit 30 and wonder why the world hasnt produced a man for her. But the have lost their looks and their brains are hardwired to be masculine so they have a horrible time understanding why no man finds them attractive...blah blah blah...

LEARN GAME, WRAP YOUR DICK, AND SUCCEED PROFESSIONALLY AND SOCIALLY. All else is irrelevant.

compared to MIT's how to get gender equality where girls with similar SAT scores were getting better grades, so taking in girls with lower scores was no problem. MIT's acceptance rates for females were more than twice as high as males when the great Marilee Jones was in charge

So in the name of equality, maybe more men with lower grades and scores should have been let it, but of course that would be a blow against gender equality, according to which women are as good as men and sometimes better. So no matter what the conditions, everything must end up with more women in a male-dominated institution and women must be as good as men or sometimes better. If you don't get this simple proposition then you're a bitter sexist misogynist.

Women do better at school, which leads more of them to go to University, but, when you get to University, who are the people putting all nighters in and doing extra work to stay ahead? It's the men.

I witnessed this myself. We had 3 girls in our 3rd year Astrophysics class. 2 of them have had to retake the year because it was 'too hard', so they are still about when I've been doing my Masters. These girls were the ones who thought the group library sessions were about socialising, rather than doing problems on whiteboards and trying to write programs. They'd sit there, eating or talking about their problems and laughing at cat videos while we were sat there, trying to get a handle on a derivation for a piece of coursework we had to hand in. When the time finally came to write up, they still hadn't done it, and wondered why it was hard. Gee, I wonder why?

They have an expectation that the course will somehow become magically easy, that they are 'destined to succeed', just because of what they were taught at school. Programs like this only reinforce this attitude of entitlement, that they should be essentially given a degree for all their 'hard work'.

The only way the majority of women will succeed, is the crazy level of micromanagement that this woman goes through in the article, where everything is managed to a crazy degree, so that women can actually succeed without ever having to bother or try to grasp the culture they are in, and adapt to it.

I went to a top 5 business school myself in Canada which borrows heavily from HBS' program. I read this and was disgusted by it because so much of what HBS is doing was reflected in my own education.

"Others grumbled that another speechmaker, a former chief executive of a company in steep decline, was invited only because she was a woman."

I can tell for a fact that this is true. We often had to sit through speakers as they highlighted as "bold, strong, women entrepreneurs" like it was the best thing since sliced bread. What I usually found from their talks was that they were much more incompetent than men, and their performance was also lackluster. They were lauded more for the fact that they were women in the driver's seat than on how well they were driving or where they were going.

"Attracting and retaining female professors was a losing battle; from 2006 to 2007, a third of the female junior faculty left."

This also doesn't surprise me. You have to be GOOD to teach at a top business school. And once again, as the article highlights later on, female faculty were piss poor compared to the men. In my program, with a faculty of over 100, I can think of maybe 2-3 women that was even remotely well respected for their teaching, and research.

I don't really understand what the big deal is in getting more female faculty. Who cares? Shouldn't their work, their teaching style, and their competence matter more? This is one of the most sickening aspects of this entire article: this forced recruitment of female faculty. I remember when I had some horribly bad professors (all women), I often wondered how they made it to even teach at a school like the one I was attending. I felt that the prestige of my education was somehow debased by her incompetence (I'm thinking of one professor in particular; funnily enough, she was our marketing prof). Yet, these women will beat out much higher quality men, will get to taunt their grrrrl power BS in front of society and I'm sure in 10 years time, nytimes will do an article about how women are overtaking all men in b-schools and the corporate world. Another victory for women. BOOOO!!!!! MEN!

This pisses me off even more in the admissions process. They favour women much much more. Harvard Business School was (and since I'm a sucker, still does) remain my dream school. Yet, if we break down the number of male applicants to the number that are accepted to the number of female applicants that are accepted, the ratios are VASTLY in favor of women.

Only 1 in 11 men make it in that apply. For women, the number is 1 in 3!!!!!!! This is MASSIVE! It also makes me very resentful to know that even if I applied with a superior application, with a superior GMAT score, with better grades, and with better letters of recommendations, I would still have to beat a mediocre women just so that HBS can fill their quota of appearing gender balanced.

Yet these same women will look at me with contempt because I wasn't good enough to make it to HBS while they obviously were.

I love how that quote makes these STRONG women appear amazing. If you work at McKinsey, or really any consulting firm, you're in large teams working as peons and you play a small part in advising chief executives. I guess if you have to get up and speak for 1-2 slides in a 100 page slide-deck presentation to a chief executive of a failing company, you can still claim you "advised chief executives" and appear impressive.

HELL YEAH! Of course this matters! What has set HBS apart for close to a 100 years is its case study method. Speaking up is how you share your thought process and help shape other classmates' thought processes. That's why up to 50% of your mark is based on case discussions. If women can't speak up, then that displays more than a lack of a "female friendly environment" or whatever BS they're talking about here. It means the women isn't confident in her own ideas, it means that women cannot stand being threatened when their ideas are challenged by the professor of other classmates. And of course, how should we fix this?!?! WELL! Let's LOWER the standards! Urgh.

Are you kidding me? Hand-raising coaching?!?!?! And to be fair, professors do NOT rely on just their own memory. At the end of the discussion, the sheets are returned back to the prof whose secretary tallies it up and helps the prof come to a proper mark. But...of course...freakin stenographers.

Because you do. You really really do. Look, not everyone is gifted. At my time at b-school, I understood quickly I was way in over my head. I spent more time prepping for my discussions. Yes, my social life was somewhat stunted until I grasped my strengths and weaknesses. Even my roommate at the time appeared to breeze through it to everyone, but I saw the intense amount of time he spent preparing and studying. Sorry ladies, you have to choose. But don't worry, I guess someone will make you not have to worry about such an inconvenient choice.

I know these type. I was surrounded by them. These same finance type worked 100-120 hours a week. They worked extremely extremely hard, and they were very well compensated for it. I am not jealous of them. They worked for it. I would personally not spend 100-120 hours/week working to be able to enjoy the luxury cars and lavish weekend getaways. They deserved it in my mind. But leave it to a woman who feeeeels bad about all this without seeing the work it takes to be a "finance type".

2 points here: 1. Women's Student Association: I assure you that there would never ever be a men's student association. It's usually just "the finance club" or "the Finance students' association". In my experience, the students who ran those sessions were vastly superior in their knowledge, and teaching style. And they were also usually men. They didn't need to broadcast how much superior they were. 2. Just because this girl can "blitz" through a review, doesn't mean shit. Having to broadcast that she is "better than all of you" does mean something though. I have no idea that women needed their ego massaged this much and be approved and validated off this much (to the point of wanting to be better than men) to feel their place in the world.

Well, when you forcefully increase the number of women admitted every year, and then bend over backwards to pamper them, then yes, this usually ends up happening.

Seems I was right.
