I'm black and I find this somewhat repugnant. At the same time though, alot of college kids think their lives are hard and have no real world experience, so maybe this will give them some kinda perspective. Too many freshmen decide to jump off bridges and slit their throats because of minor shit.

I'd solve this class in five seconds with a single question :

Are you a studying at Harvard? If the answer is yes, then you're most definitely privileged, regardless of your race, sex, class or religion.

[–]wubalubadub9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought the point of being privileged was not having to listen to bullshit like this on campus

[–]ArtificialButters2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but to retain your sense of moral superiority you must entertain notions of how the plebes live their lives every now and again.

[–]Blood_Vaults4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I've slept on dirt floors for months on end, been poisoned, shot at, almost blown up multiple times and I still know my quality of life back in the united states is better than everyone in the third world.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

plenty of people in the third world with better quality of life. just because you live in the states doesn't make you lucky.

you could also be rich, but unhealthy.

[–]Blood_Vaults3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

If you're rich and unhealthy, there's a large chance that's entirely your fault alone. A rich person can afford a nutritionist, a personal chef, personal trainer(s), and modern medical facilities that aren't under the constant threat of being razed to the ground by rebel forces. So unless God hates you and gives you cancer, it's probably your fault you are not healthy. No tears here.

Rial, the 'middle class' Yemini citizen I met in Sana'a can just about afford to feed his family most days, while working a very dangerous profession.

Claude, this jacked Jamaican dude I met in GITMO bay who at worked one of the gyms over there, swam 200 miles through open water for the chance to work for minimum wage on a naval base.

Yes, inflation, feminism, and the greed of the true elite are tearing this country asunder and our way of life isn't sustainable, but for now you don't even have to fucking work to get paid by the government, which is unheard of outside of the west.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

No it isn't your fault, you can only stay healthy for so long.

if you are rich and ailing every ailment 'costs' you more. how many of those people pay up to top doctors to get the cosmetic benefits that young people get for free?

and lets not forget the problem if byzantine relations in this strata of society, one cannot even trust his family.

quite a lot of sweat and blood is indeed wasted on the aging elites and their trust fund babies, they don't get a lot of utility for their money. and yet those people still refuse like you said, to work out, set real example, make a name for themselves by sponsoring research and so forth. on top of this one must add the fact that people cite accumulation of wealth as a reason as to why people should not strive to live long, 'if the wealthy will get that perfect we will envy them forever' while the very reason you envy the rich is because they do things with their money that seem irrational or immoral, because they try to make up for other factors that plague them.

and to this I must add, a kid who was born feral in neolithic africa has more utility than say, sheldon adelson. or a more relatable example : a gym PT who was raised in cuba has more utility than a harvard pushover who has 0 spare time and is under constant stress from studying because he has to.

utility aka 'privilage' works this way , you can be poor, in pain, disgraced , distressed and dying and not be on the privilage checklist, and get called a shitlord by some dark-skinned-bicurious middle class girl from harvard.

[–]jelloba 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

death throes Not trying to be a smartass, I just hate this error.

[–]The_Psychopath8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They're all at fucking HARVARD. The only way they could get more privileged is if they were born with a golden spoon in their mouth and their manservant that carries their bookbag was only born with a silver spoon.

[–]Glenbert6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Does anyone here think the the school's namesake ever, or would have ever, checked his own ridiculously immense privileged?

[–]JohnGalt3164 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i would have a blast with this

i'd point out all the advantages blacks, gays, and women get and i'd drop the "check your privilege" line

David, in the category of soft student brains, I'd enjoy your insights on this proposal for mandatory privilege shaming in Harvard:

At Friday’s event, about 80 students participated in an exercise to visualize the differences in privilege created by race and gender. The students began in a single line, but as students were asked to step forward or backward based on questions about the social repercussions of their socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and sexual identities, the line became disjointed.

...

I don’t have much to add to previous outings on the subject. What’s interesting, I suppose, and discouraging, is that those fretting as instructed about “power differentials” don’t seem overly troubled by the rather obvious and intimate power - and willingness to intrude - of those who wish to purge them of WrongThought™. I just wonder if there comes a point at which an institution is so snarled in dogma and begged questions, and so steeped in dishonesty, that it becomes not only unworthy but unsalvageable.

...

A lot of them seem to like it.

It's like paying good money to be spanked with a hairbrush by a middle aged woman and told you're a naughty pony.

Except less dignified.

The big draw for these Maoist self-criticism sessions seems to be a combination of the thrill of humiliating others while wallowing in delicious victimhood, and even for the poor pathetic specimens who get to denounce themselves for their hideous whiteness or whatever, at least it's all about THEM.

...

... the ideologues and monomaniacs behind such policies show an extraordinary disregard for normal boundaries and proprieties. It’s a defining feature of the type, one we’ve seen again and again and again. Imposing on others, especially the young and impressionable, and making them uncomfortable, anxious and dishonest seems to be the pay-off for all that bogus piety. It’s a license for sadism and it therefore attracts a certain kind of person. And the fact that their efforts are typically absurd doesn’t make them any less sinister.

Well, anyone going to school for "government" is a fucking asshole. So this makes sense.
